There are few plays in basketball as satisfying as an emphatic blocked shot. Luckily for those watching Seton Hall, you can expect them in bunches thanks to the Pirates' 7-foot-2 center, graudate student Ike Obiagu.

Obiagu's presence in the middle of the floor is quite the deterrent for driving guards and posting up bigs alike, as he's liable to swallow them up no matter the skill set.

He spent the first year of his collegiate career at Florida State before making his way to South Orange. After sitting out the required year, he made his presnce known immediately.

So what should you know about Seton Hall's shot-blocking phenom?

So about those blocked shots

In his first year playing at Seton Hall, the 2019-20 season, Obiagu hadn't yet rounded into form, though he still managed to collect 36 blocks despite playing just 10 minutes a game. That was good for second on the team, behind evenutal Big East Defensive Player of the Year Romaro Gill.

So how did he follow that up? By more than doubling his total blocked shots and setting a school record with 77 blocks.

Seems like a tough act to follow, right? You'd be right. But he's somehow managed, sending his own record 10 rows deep with 91 blocks and counting heading into the NCAA Tournament.

That's a career total of 204, blowing past the previous school record of 165 set by Seton Hall legend Samuel Dalembert, who went on to have a 14-year NBA career defined by his shot blocking skill. Not a bad guy to blow out of the water in the record books.

Building a foundation

Surprise, there's more to say about Obiagu's rejection obsession, this time in the context of the rest of his role on the court.

Have you ever heard of a player being a "bricklayer?" It's a derisive term to describe someone who can't shoot particularly well, or "bricks" a lot of shots. While a look at Obiagu's average points per game—2.6, with just five games scoring five or more points—that wouldn't totally be fair because he just doesn't shoot often. He's not laying bricks; he's using building blocks.

In fact, in 21 of his 28 games, he had as many or more blocks as he had field goal attempts. Not made shots or points—attempts.

As a sidenote, as a big man a lot of how Obiagu contributes, especially altering shots and tapping out rebounds to his teammates, don't appear on the statsheet.

The biggest accountant ever?

One of the NCAA's go-to marketing slogans is that the vast majority of student-athletes "go pro in something other than sports." For Obiagu, whose blocks-or-nothing style of play does not translate as well to the modern professional basketball world, he's set on a path to be an accountant.

After finishing undergrad with majoring in business administration with a concentration in accounting, Obiagu is currently pursuing a master's degree in professional accounting. The 2021 Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year doesn't let games or travel get in the way of his studies.

Associate head coach Grant Billmeier relayed a story about Obiagu after a February road win over Georgetown (he had five blocks, naturally): he looks up at what he expects to be a fully asleep bus and sees one man studying at 2 a.m.

Studying on a bus ride after a game isn't particularly noteworth; they are student-athletes, after all. But Obiagu wasn't studying for a test the next day, he was brushing up on notes for the CPA exam, which he won't be taking until months from now.

“Of the greatest people we’ve ever had, he’s right at the top,” Billmeier said.
