It's a battle that feels as well-worn as Republicans vs. Democrats and has gripped the South Jersey-Pennsylvania-Delaware area for generations: Which is the better gas station convenience store/hoagie purveyor/cultural identifier: Wawa or Sheetz?

The fight hit a new frontier Monday night: "Late Night with Seth Meyers."

After Meyers clued in his presumably New York metro area-based audience onto the admitted joys of Sheetz—"the only place outside of New York you can go to buy mouthwash, fuzzy dice, a 12-inch sub and a six-pack of Keystone Light at the same time"—he acknowledged the Lucy the Elephant in the room:

"I realize I'm stepping into the middle of an extremely fraught rivalry between Sheetz and Wawa," he said.

And while the New Jersey version of this debate usually centers on Wawa vs. QuickChek (or sometimes Royal Farms)—especially since there aren't any actual Sheetz locations in the state—if there's one thing New Jerseyans will do, it's wade into an argument half-informed and at full volume.

"My staff is packed with people from Jersey, Philly, and, worst of all, Delaware," Meyers continued. "They all insist Wawa is better than Sheetz."

And then comes the kicker. Meyers, while maybe best known as a Northwestern graduate (he was born in Evanston, IL), has a tight tie to Pittsburgh: his father is a native. And according to this dataset, Pittsburgh is the city with the third-most Sheetz locations in the country.

"I'm the host, so I get to decide," he said. "And to fans of Wawa, I simply say..."

Cue sad trombone sound (wa wa).

Wawa fans, famous for their levelheadness about their preferred store, certainly won't forget this.
