What Growing Vegetables Taught Me About Community, Silence, and the Possibility of Connection

Every morning, before the neighborhood fully wakes, I step into my garden. It’s a small patch of earth at the edge of the street, nothing grand, nothing elaborate, but it has become the place where I think, breathe, and watch the world move around me.

I plant, I cultivate, I gather cucumbers, squash, eggplants, and peppers. I listen to the soil. I listen to myself. I press my ear against a stately oak tree and listen to the Folsom and jetsam, which sound like rushing water moving inside it, and I watch my neighbors pass by.

The Quiet Distance in an Upscale Black Subdivision

Some walk briskly, eyes fixed straight ahead. Some cross to the opposite side of the street to avoid making eye contact. Some pretend not to see me at all.

One young, bearded runner once grunted, not a greeting, not a hello, but a theatrical sound meant to dramatize that he had “overlooked” me standing right there, a performance of surprise instead of a simple acknowledgment.

These moments aren’t confrontational. They’re revealing.

They show how even in a beautiful, well‑kept, predominantly Black upscale subdivision, a place where success is visible in the lawns, the cars, the architecture, we still struggle with the simplest form of community: acknowledging one another’s humanity.

The Mountains Behind Me and the Lessons They Offer

I’ve climbed prodigious mountains in my life: Real ones, metaphorical ones, mountains that tested my endurance, my judgment, my spirit.

Those mountains shaped me. They taught me how to navigate hardship, how to read people, how to survive storms, and how to build a life with intention.

And yet, those mountains pale in comparison to the dilemmas facing many young people today. Their challenges are different (social, economic, emotional, digital) but no less steep.

There is so much they could learn from an older man tending a vegetable garden in the quiet of the morning. Not because I am extraordinary, but because I have lived long enough to understand what matters. I have lived long enough to know that wisdom often grows in the soil of ordinary days.

The Joy of Small Exchanges

Now and then, something breaks through the silence.

A jogger slows down. A walker pauses. A neighbor lingers long enough for me to hand them a cucumber, a squash, or an eggplant; a small gift from the garden, a sign of community and friendship. Their faces soften. Their voices warm. For a moment, the distance between us disappears.

And then there is the neighbor who stops by regularly to ask how I’m doing. We talk about gardening, share tips, and swap Callaloo recipes. Those conversations remind me that connection doesn’t require grand gestures; just willingness.

My neighbor of 27 years, the late Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, C. T. Vivian, often stopped by during his morning walk, and we would spend a couple of hours solving every world problem devised by the politicians of the day. I planted a small plot of asparagus just for him to pick when he wanted asparagus.

These small exchanges are proof that community is still possible. It’s still alive. It’s just waiting for us to choose it.

A Garden Is More Than a Garden

A garden is a teacher.

It teaches patience. It teaches observation. It teaches humility because the soil does not care who you are. It teaches generosity because the harvest is meant to be shared. It teaches presence because plants grow at the pace of attention, not ambition.

And it teaches something else: Community begins with small acts of offering.

A vegetable handed across a fence. A recipe shared at the mailbox. A conversation sparked by a tomato plant or Nkrumah Okra seeds imported from Ghana. A moment of recognition between two people who might otherwise remain strangers.

Why This Matters Beyond My Street

In a world where people are increasingly isolated, even while living close together, the garden reminds me that connection is not complicated. It is not theoretical. It is not abstract.

It is practical. It is tangible. It is grown, not declared.

And it begins with simple gestures that say:

I see you. I acknowledge you. I welcome you. I am part of this place, and so are you.

The Garden as an Invitation

As I continue tending my garden, I am also tending something larger: the possibility of community.

A garden is a place where people can slow down long enough to greet one another. A place where silence can turn into conversation. A place where neighbors can rediscover the simple joy of connection.

And perhaps, just perhaps, a place where we can learn to be the kind of community Mr. Walker quietly embodied.

Because the distance between us is smaller than we think, and sometimes, all it takes to close it is a cucumber, a squash, an eggplant, and a willingness to share what grows in our hands and in our hearts.

A Closing Note to My Neighbors

If you ever find yourself walking past my yard in the morning, whether you’re jogging, strolling, or simply taking a moment for yourself, I hope you’ll pause at the edge of the garden.

I’ll be out there most days, tending cucumbers, squash, eggplants, peppers, and whatever else the season allows. It’s honest work, quiet work, the kind that steadies the mind and opens the heart. And it’s work I’m always glad to share.

If you stop for a moment, I’ll hand you something fresh from the soil, a cucumber still cool from the morning air, a squash with its bloom barely faded, an eggplant shining like polished stone. It’s a small gesture, but it’s my way of saying: I see you. You’re welcome here. We are neighbors in more than name.

Some of you already stop by. You ask how I’m doing. You talk gardening with me. You share tips, swap recipes, laugh about what grew well and what didn’t. Those conversations mean more than you know. They remind me that community isn’t built in meetings; it’s built in moments.

So if you’re passing by, don’t rush. Don’t cross the street. Don’t look away. Say hello. Take a vegetable. Share a story. Let’s make this subdivision feel a little less like a collection of houses and a little more like a place where people truly know one another.

The garden is open. The conversation is open. And I’m right here, ready to welcome you.
