How Bottoms Is Absorbing Jackson’s Hardest Punch

As I write this, rain sweeps across Atlanta, the outer bands of the season’s first hurricane pushing inland from the coast. It’s not a gentle rain. It arrives with intention, drumming the earth, rattling the gutters, reminding anyone awake at this hour that pressure is building somewhere beyond the horizon. The storm is a fitting backdrop for the moment Georgia finds itself in, twenty‑four days before Election Day, three days before early voting begins, and a gubernatorial race tightening into its most volatile rounds.

Rick Jackson and Keisha Lance Bottoms are no longer shadowboxing. They are in the ring now, gloves up, sweat rising, each looking for the punch that will define the fight. And Jackson’s latest television advertisement, invoking the tragic killing of Secoriea Turner, lands not as a standard political jab but as a rabbit punch, the kind Floyd Patterson once threw in close quarters, snapping an opponent’s head from behind. It is a blow meant to disorient, to shock, to force a stumble.

Jackson’s Rabbit Punch: The Turner Ad

The ad, as reported by multiple outlets, revisits the 2020 shooting of eight‑year‑old Secoriea Turner near the burned-out Wendy’s where protests erupted after the killing of Rayshard Brooks. Jackson’s campaign frames the moment as a failure of leadership during Lance Bottoms’ mayoralty, pairing emotionally charged imagery with a narrator’s stark indictment: “What Keisha Lance Bottoms did, there’s no excuse.”

It is a punch thrown with precision timing. Jackson has spent unprecedented sums on advertising throughout the campaign, saturating Georgia’s airwaves with a frequency rarely seen in statewide politics. But this ad is different. It is not biography. It is not policy. It is not a contrast of visions.

It is a strike aimed at memory, specifically the kind that can still move undecided voters in the final rounds.

By invoking Secoriea Turner’s death, Jackson is reaching for one of the most emotionally volatile moments of Atlanta’s 2020 summer. The campaign’s calculation is clear: if voters feel that instability again, even briefly, Bottoms becomes a risk rather than a steady hand.

Bottoms’ Counter: The Ali Clench

If Jackson is throwing Patterson‑style rabbit punches, Bottoms is responding with the discipline of Muhammad Ali in tight spots: the clench, the subtle art of neutralizing an opponent’s power by controlling the space between bodies.

Her recent messaging has emphasized steadiness, competence, and forward‑looking policy: Medicaid expansion, affordability, education, stability. In debates, she has slipped into the role of Ali’s metaphorical bee: stinging with facts, dancing around misstatements, refusing to be cornered.

The clench is not passive. It is strategic. It buys time. It frustrates the aggressor. It forces the electorate, the referee in this contest, to reconsider the match’s rhythm.

The question now is whether she can keep the fight tied up long enough to jab her way through the final rounds, despite the enormity of Jackson’s Turner ad.

The Undercard: Undecided Voters and Early Voting

Every major fight has an undercard, and in Georgia, the undercard is roughly 7% of undecided voters, according to recent reporting. They break late, respond strongly to emotional cues, and often decide statewide races in the final stretch.

Jackson’s ad targets them squarely. It is a knockout attempt thrown just before early voting begins, hoping to fix an impression before ballots are cast.

Lance Bottoms, meanwhile, is relying on fundamentals: ground game, message discipline, and the slow accumulation of trust. Her strategy mirrors Ali’s late‑fight approach: jab, move, clench, frustrate, and wait for the opponent to overextend.

The Final Rounds

Georgia hasn’t elected a Democratic governor since 1998, and the state’s political evolution has made this contest one of the country’s most closely watched. Both candidates are fighting not just for votes, but to control the narrative in the final days.

Jackson’s rabbit punch may rattle the ring, but Lance Bottoms’ clench may steady it. The Turner ad introduces volatility; the response introduces resilience.

And this is where the rain matters.

Storms, meteorological or political, reveal what is already true. They expose the strength of foundations, the discipline of fighters, the steadiness of leaders. As the hurricane’s outer bands sweep across Atlanta this morning, they underscore the reality of this moment: Georgia is entering the final rounds of a bruising contest, and every punch, every clench, every jab now carries the weight of the storm.

The bell hasn’t rung yet. The fighters are circling. And Georgia is watching; the nation is, too.
