Fox Mulder and Dana Scully pose for the X-Files The Truth Is Still Out There

Hulu is going to keep looking for the truth with The X-Files reboot.

Development on the new iteration of the sci-fi series was revealed by original creator Chris Carter in early 2023 when he revealed that Black Panther and Sinners' Ryan Coogler was developing the new show. Hulu would later come onboard the new X-Files series with a pilot order in early 2026, with Carry-On's Danielle Deadwyler and The Odyssey's Himesh Patel set in the lead roles, while production ran from May to June the same year, though updates had remained minimal on the status of the show.

Now, some four months later, Hulu has now decided the X-Files reboot's fate in giving the Coogler-created project a full series order. The new show is being described as a "reimagining" of the beloved sci-fi series, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel starring as "two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents" who are "assigned to a long-shuttered division" and form a bond while working there. Coogler wrote about the series pickup with the following statement:

Ryan Coogler: I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me. What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.

In addition to creating the new iteration of the series, Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced The X-Files reboot pilot and will remain onboard the show in the latter capacity. With the project now having a full series order, Jennifer Yale, best known for her work on the likes of Apple TV's See and FX's Legion, will take over as showrunner and also executive producer alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian through the group's Proximity Media banner, and Carter.

David Duchovny's Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Scully looking worried while standing in the snow in The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Though not included in the official announcement of the series order, The X-Files reboot has already expanded with a star-studded cast of guest stars for the pilot. Among them are Amy Madigan, fresh off of her Oscar victory for Zach Cregger's Weapons, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal, Lochlyn Munro, Joel Montgrand and Sofia Grace Clifton, all of whose roles are still under wraps as of the time of writing.

The two biggest questions still surrounding the new X-Files series are whether it will be a full reboot of the iconic franchise, and whether David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their original roles of Mulder and Scully. The new official description of Coogler's series does seemingly point to it being a sequel or continuation of some kind of Carter's original show, given the X-Files division is said to be "long-shuttered," albeit why it was after its pseudo-re-opening in the two revival seasons is not yet known.

As for Duchovny and Anderson, the former star has been a little more vague in his responses about returning for Coogler's X-Files series, though has confirmed having talked with the creator at some point. The latter, meanwhile, has been very enthusiastic at the prospect of working with Coogler on the new show, with Carter seemingly letting it slip this past August that she would be back as Scully in the new show.

Now that the show is officially moving forward at Hulu, proper updates on The X-Files reboot are sure to come in the very near future, particularly details regarding its connection to the original show and when production may get underway on the rest of the season. Plus, with there having been multiple months spent between the pilot wrapping and the official series pickup, there's also a strong chance that the writers room may be very well underway on fleshing out their scripts to ensure a swifter production resumption and release.
