Carrie Coon's Callie looking scared at something while in her Ghostbuster gear in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

EXCLUSIVE: Carrie Coon is still waiting on the call for Ghostbusters 5.

The four-time Emmy nominee made her franchise debut with 2021's Afterlife, which served as a legacy sequel to Ghostbusters II and shifted the focus to Callie Spengler, the estranged daughter of Harold Ramis' Egon who, along with her teenage son Trevor, teenage daughter Phoebe and love interest Gary, becomes the new generation of heroes. Prior to the last release, plans were confirmed for a Ghostbusters 5, though progress updates have been relatively few.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Ben Gibbons at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival, Carrie Coon was asked for an update on the next Ghostbusters movie. The star confessed that "I haven't reached out" to the franchise's creative team in some time, but did tease that Jason Reitman "had an idea a long time ago," with everyone's schedules being the main hurdle at the moment:

Carrie Coon: He’s very busy restoring all the theaters in LA, or at least his own theater. So, I’m not sure what he has planned. We always joke that I’ll be dead, and I’ll just be a nagging ghost, but we’ll see if that’s the plan.

Talks began swirling about the franchise's next film, generally dubbed Ghostbusters 5, in keeping with the mainline series of films in lieu of Paul Feig's divisive reboot, before Frozen Empire released, with Gil Kenan, who co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire and directed the latter, confirming a sequel as of October 2024. Dan Aykroyd later indicated he didn't expect himself or Bill Murray to return, though Ernie Hudson has remained dedicated to giving WInston a bigger role going forward.

The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ending certainly left the door open for a future in the franchise. Having saved New York from the powerful Garraka, William Atherton's Walter Peck, now NYC's mayor, publicly supported the Ghostbusters and allowed the underage Phoebe to continue her work on the team, with them swiftly having to get to work to recapture the various ghosts that escaped after Garraka destroyed the firehouse's containment unit.

Despite the early planning stages for Ghostbusters 5, the chances of it moving forward immediately became in doubt when Frozen Empire proved a box office disappointment, grossing just shy of $202 million at the global box office. Not only did that point to it losing money for Sony, given films generally need to make 2.5 times their budget to break even, which in Frozen Empire's case would've been $250 million, but it also became the lowest-grossing installment in the franchise overall.

Even more notable is that in the years since this lackluster showing, focus has shifted in an entirely new direction for the Ghostbusters franchise. The Netflix animated series, originally announced in mid 2022, properly gained steam in mid 2024 when the streamer greenlit the project, and details later revealed that the show, officially titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift, will be set in 1994 and release sometime in 2027.

Similarly, Netflix announced in December 2024 that they were working on an animated Ghostbusters film, reviving the project after multiple prior attempts were quietly scrapped in development, with The Willoughbys' Kris Pearn attached as director. Much like the previously planned Ghostbusters 5, no real details have emerged about the film in the time since, but between it and the series, it does seemingly point to the franchise aiming for an overall animated approach going forward.
