Brandon Sanderson has some early thoughts on Mistborn's casting.
After years of false starts, development on an adaptation of Sanderson's expansive fantasy novel franchise started gaining steam in January 2026 when Apple TV acquired the rights for the author's entire Cosmere universe, with him set to pen the script for the Mistborn film. The months since have seen Sanderson make steady progress, submitting the first draft of the script in July and getting the notes for the second draft in October.
Now, during a special Halloween episode on his YouTube channel with his wife Emily answering fan mail, Sanderson has offered a brief update on the Mistborn movie's casting plans. Though the author/screenwriter didn't specifically state whether Apple TV is currently eyeing or in negotiations with any stars, he did indicate that "the only big name" the movie will likely cast for is the half-skaa rebellion leader Kelsier, while the production will "look for talented new actors" to bring Vin and Elend to life.

In the world of Sanderson's Mistborn novels, Vin, Elend and Kelsier are the most important characters to cast, in the same way that Katniss, Peeta and President Snow were some of the most vital for The Hunger Games franchise, among others. Vin and Elend are the central figures of Era One, with the former living on the streets and possessing Mistborn abilities, while the latter is a noble unaware of his counterpart's hand in the rising rebellion, but would become a key player in the world-changing event known as The Collapse.
Sanderson's feeling that, of the three, Kelsier would be the proper big-name casting for the Mistborn movie compared to Vin and Elend does make a fair amount of success. Without diving into spoilers from the novels, the half-skaa rebellion leader's role changes dramatically after the first book, The Final Empire, and with him being in his late 30s and simultaneously charismatic and dangerous enough to head up a rebellion, getting a familiar face would create the appropriate emotional inner turmoil with viewers.
As for Vin and Elend, the pair being the leads of the second and third installments of Mistborn's Era One, and all of them being set within a few years of each other, likely means that the production team will aim to cast stars who can lead an ongoing franchise. With Sanderson still in the drafting stage, and previously stating it would still be a couple of years before its release, there is still plenty of time for rising young stars to make enough of a stamp to enter the running.
Since the announcement of its development, passionate Cosmere fans have been sharing their various Mistborn fancasts for all of Era One's characters. Some of the most notable choices for Vin include Wednesday's Emma Myers and Marvel Cinematic Universe vet Dafne Keen, while Enola Holmes' Louis Partridge and The Long Walk's Charlie Plummer have been floated for Elend and Sinners' Jack O'Connell for Kelsier. With no director or timeline set for the film, it will be interesting to see who Sanderson and his team start to eye.
