Still of Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan in Boston Blue season 2.

Exclusive: It's the start of a new era for Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan as Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, begins season 2

After anchoring Blue Bloods for 14 seasons, Wahlberg movedto the spinoff that tackled Danny's story more closely. Boston Blue premiered in the 2025-26 season and explored a new city where Danny's family wasn't at the epicenter. A very different look for the Blue Bloods franchise, Boston Blue season 2 continues the trend of exploring new avenues for the long-established character.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Boston Blue showrunner Brandon Sonnier revealed that Danny has a lot coming in the show's season 2, which premiered Friday, October 9. After establishing a romance between Danny and his former partner, Maria Baez (Marissa Ramirez), during season 1, Sonnier said Boston Blue season 2 will "see a new version of their relationship" as Baez's young daughter, Elena, comes into the picture. "We get to see a new version of Danny being a parent to a young child, a girl this time, which he hasn't done for quite a while," Sonnier shared.

While Wahlberg's character spent the first half of Blue Bloods married, his wife died tragically between seasons 7 and 8 of the CBS series, leaving Danny to navigate fatherhood on his own. Years later and ready to pursue a long-simmering romance, Danny moving into a parental role was unexpected for Boston Blue. "Danny's relationship with Elena is magic," Sonnier revealed, explaining that it's "wonderful" and "special" to watch Danny's relationship with a daughter figure flourish.

Well, we can tell you that it's a much shorter distance setup now, so we we come into season 2 with Baez moving to Boston to move in with Danny. She's bringing Elena, her daughter. So, we get to see a new version of their relationship. We get to see a new version of Danny being a parent to a young child, a girl this time, which he hasn't done for quite a while. Never a girl, so watching this new Danny navigate not only the new world of Boston, but now this new domestic situation of being a girl dad, is part of how we're pushing that character forward this season. I can spoil for you that Danny's relationship with Elena is magic. I've seen the scenes, and it's really wonderful to watch Danny Reagan, the hard detective that we've seen for so long, really really be a strong father figure to a young girl. It's pretty special.

Danny's character, who had two sons with his late wife on Blue Bloods, hasn't been a parent to young children in the franchise for years, but bringing him into a new space gave Boston Blue the chance to shake things up. With Danny getting the chance to pursue a relationship with Baez and build a new life with her child in the picture, the family elements viewers loved from the original series will finally weave into the spinoff.

With Boston Blue consistently pushing boundaries and finding new ways to give Danny unexpected challenges, seeing him parenting a young child in any capacity should be an interesting journey. Blue Bloods may have established Danny as a character, but Boston Blue gives him the chance to step into an entirely new era.
