Exclusive: Boston Blue season 2 is finally catching up with the Reagan family.

Boston Blue, which follows Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan as he relocates from New York to Boston to take on a new challenge, is bringing more original stars from the CBS series into the fold after its debut season. Boston Blue season 1 saw Bridget Moynahan's Erin Reagan, Len Cariou's Henry Reagan, and Will Hochman's Joe Hill in guest appearances, while Marisa Ramirez's Maria Baez recurred throughout the season. In the coming season, Ramirez's character will return to Boston Blue, and CBS has already announced that Will Estes will return as Jamie Reagan.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier shared new details about the highly anticipated family reunion, saying they decided to bring Jamie to Boston Blue because they wanted to revisit another character who made Blue Bloods a staple.

"We miss those characters," Margolis shared. "They were part of the fabric of TV for so long that to be without the rest of the Reagans, we feel that same absence." Explaining that the team is working to address what happened in the family member's lives since Danny last saw them, Margolis said Boston Blue viewers should expect a major update.

With Estes set to arrive on Boston Blue season 2, episode 5, Margolis shared that Jamie's visit may start off professional, but "that balloons into something bigger, and turns into a full-episode story." Spending an entire episode with Jamie and Danny will be exciting after not having seen them together since the end of Blue Bloods' 14-season run.

Examining the brothers' relationship as it stands now is important to both their lives, and it offers a chance to honor their time together on Blue Bloods while moving forward with their connectionon Boston Blue.

Sonnier explained that it's been important to the creative team to ensure Jamie and Danny get the chance to reconnect, and that understanding what's going on in Jamie's life is key to bringing him back to the CBS franchise. "We will get the update on what's going on with Eddie and their son," Sonnier shared, ensuring that though Jamie's wife Eddie Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray) may not be a physical part of his appearance, her presence will be felt during his time on Boston Blue.

It appears that the team behind Boston Blue is hopeful that Jamie will return to Danny's new home in the future, with Sonnier explaining that the first appearance on the series was meant to "give some air for the audience to re-embrace Jamie" and re-solidify the relationship between the Reagan brothers. Boston Blue's big reunion gives the brothers a great chance to reconnect and set the stage for what's to come.
