As Sydney Sweeney gets to work on its sequel, The Housemaid is about to get another adaptation.
Having already been a bestselling hit upon its 2022 publication, Freida McFadden's thriller novel further exploded in popularity with Sweeney's 2025 film, in which she starred as the eponymous Millie as her new job working for a wealthy couple immediately becomes a tangled web of passion and danger. Thanks to its record-breaking box office run and solid reception, plans for The Housemaid's Secret kicked off shortly thereafter, with Sweeney, Michele Morrone, director Paul Feig and scribe Rebecca Sonnenshine all returning.
Now, Deadline has brought word that Lionsgate is officially adapting The Housemaid into a stage production. The studio is teaming with Tony nominee Bekah Brunstetter to pen the script for the new adaptation of Freida McFadden's hit thriller novel, with fellow Tony nominee Matthew Dunster set to direct, and Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska attached to produce via their Melting Pot banner. Additionally, The Housemaid play is set to begin at London's Richmond Theatre on September 14, 2027, three months ahead of Sweeney's sequel.
In addition to the announcement, Friend offered a brief tease of their plans for the Housemaid stage adaptation, describing the production as a "fresh and uniquely theatrical take" on both McFadden's novel and Sweeney's film, while also aiming to "bring a thrilling new dimension" to the proceedings.

While staying generally true to its source material, Sweeney's Housemaid did notably come with a few changes from the novel that the stage adaptation could better lean into or expand upon. From Morrone's Enzo being a much more active character in the Winchester family's lives and Millie's interactions with them to the fate and resolution behind the story's central villain, there are plenty of ways that the stage play can set itself apart from the blockbuster hit.
News of the new Housemaid adaptation also comes on the heels of production kicking off on Sweeney's Secret, which is slated for a December 17, 2027 release, sticking with the first movie's Holiday 2025 window that led to a $400 million worldwide box office haul. Joining Sweeney and Morone for the sequel are Kirsten Dunst, Paul Anthony Kelly, Brittany Snow and Stephen Kalyn, with filming currently underway in New York City.
Interestingly, The Housemaid continues both Lionsgate and other studios' trend of bringing some of their biggest film franchises to the stage with new adaptations. While having already adapted it for the stage, Dirty Dancing is set to get its first-ever Broadway debut in February, while the musical iteration of Now You See Me kicks off its Broadway run beginning this month. Furthermore, Stranger Things memorably expanded with the canonical prequel, The First Shadow, and Paramount's Paranormal Activity became a smash hit, all of which bodes well for Lionsgate's new production.
