Kentucky has already beaten one Top 10 team and pulled off the biggest road comeback in school history. Now Will Stein’s Wildcats welcome No. 10 LSU to Lexington for a game that could change the expectations for his first season.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB+WAVE) — Remnants of a hurricane are headed toward Kentucky. Lane Kiffin has apparently found a quotation that Kentucky’s quarterback never said. And the Wildcats are bringing back a football helmet logo that hasn’t always been associated with winning football.

Just another ordinary Saturday night in the Southeastern Conference.

But underneath the weather forecasts, the psychological warfare and the nostalgia is something considerably more interesting.

Kentucky has a chance to make people rethink what kind of football program it can be.

Five games into Will Stein’s first season, the Wildcats are 4-1. They’ve beaten No. 9 Texas A&M on the road. They’ve overcome a 17-point deficit to win at South Carolina, the largest road comeback in school history. They’ve won three straight games and are 2-1 in the SEC.

Now comes No. 10 LSU, with Lane Kiffin, one of the nation’s most productive offenses and a defense that has spent much of the season making opposing offenses miserable.

The Tigers are favored by 8½ points. Their only loss came at Ole Miss, and they responded by beating Texas A&M 35-6 and McNeese 63-14.

Kentucky has already shown that it can produce an upset. Saturday offers a chance to show it can build a season around them.

There’s a temptation to look at what’s happened at Indiana under Curt Cignetti and wonder whether Kentucky might be embarking on something similar. Indiana went from football afterthought to national champion in two seasons. Kentucky isn’t anywhere near that accomplishment, and five games aren’t enough to make such comparisons seriously.

But every transformation has a moment when people begin to believe it might be happening. Saturday could be one of those moments. And if history is any indication, LSU should be prepared for just about anything in Lexington.

The Tigers won here in 2002 on the Bluegrass Miracle, a 75-yard touchdown pass as time expired. They returned in 2007 as the nation’s No. 1 team and lost to Kentucky in triple overtime. Their last visit, in 2021, ended in a 42-21 Kentucky victory.

LSU hasn’t won in Lexington since that miracle in 2002.

Saturday, Kentucky will wear its old Power K logo, a favorite of Stein’s because his father played during that era. The coach remembers wearing a plastic helmet with the logo as a child.

The forecast calls for rain and gusty winds from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias.

And somewhere in the LSU football facility, a photograph of Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey reportedly appeared alongside a quotation declaring that LSU’s defense hasn’t seen an offense like Kentucky’s.

Minchey didn’t say it, according to Stein. Kiffin said he hadn’t seen the social media controversy. Nobody seems particularly interested in admitting responsibility.

Fortunately, the two teams can settle the more important questions on the football field.

How to Watch

LSU leads the all-time series 40-17-1. Kentucky won the most recent meeting, 42-21, in Lexington in 2021. The Tigers have lost their past two visits to Kroger Field, including the Wildcats’ 43-37 triple-overtime upset of No. 1 LSU in 2007.

What to Watch

1. Can Kentucky’s offensive line survive LSU’s pass rush?

If there is one matchup that ought to keep Stein awake this week, it’s this one.

LSU has recorded 22 sacks in five games, second-most in the nation. Defensive end Princewill Umanmielen leads the country with eight sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Freshman defensive tackle Deuce Geralds has another five sacks.

Together, they’ve collected 13 sacks, more than any other pair of teammates in college football.

Kentucky’s offensive line is coming off one of its better performances. Left tackle Lance Heard, himself a former LSU player, earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors after the South Carolina victory.

But this is another level of difficulty.

The Tigers rank fourth nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 58.4 yards per game. They surrender only 220.6 total yards per game, second-best in the country.

And Kentucky has an uncomfortable statistical problem: The Wildcats rank last nationally in third-down conversion percentage.

“Obviously, it’s the worst in the country,” Stein said. “So we got to continue to improve in that area.”

He argues that Kentucky has been much more efficient on first and second downs, frequently avoiding third down altogether. But against LSU, third-and-long is practically an invitation to disaster.

Kentucky needs to stay ahead of the chains, protect Minchey and prevent the Tigers from turning the game into a parade of obvious passing situations.

2. Which Kenny Minchey will LSU see?

Not the one who supposedly insulted its defense.

The actual Minchey has been considerably more careful with his words and, more importantly, the football.

The Notre Dame transfer has completed 68.3% of his passes for 1,148 yards, with 11 touchdowns and only one interception. Against South Carolina, he threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns and made several important plays with his legs.

Stein has been urging Minchey to become more assertive as a runner, particularly when protection breaks down.

The coach doesn’t consider him an exceptional athlete by SEC quarterback standards, but he likes his ability to escape trouble.

“He’s just kind of slithery out there,” Stein said.

That mobility helped Kentucky erase its 17-point deficit at South Carolina and eventually win on Minchey’s two-point conversion pass to Willie Rodriguez in overtime.

Kiffin has been impressed by what he’s seen.

“Playing really smooth, has good flow to how he plays, moves around the pocket, very good pocket presence, and makes a lot of really big throws,” Kiffin said. “He seems like a really good leader too.”

LSU’s quarterback, Sam Leavitt, presents a different challenge.

Kentucky recruited Leavitt out of the transfer portal, and Stein said the former Arizona State quarterback visited campus. He ultimately chose LSU, where he has accounted for 14 touchdowns, eight passing and six rushing.

But he also has thrown seven interceptions in five games.

Kentucky’s Jordan Castell has two interceptions of his own.

If Minchey continues protecting the football and Kentucky can force Leavitt into a mistake or two, the Wildcats could begin to narrow the talent advantage LSU brings into the game.

3. Who wins the halftime chess match?

There’s a peculiar similarity between these teams. Both have been at their best immediately after halftime.

Kentucky has scored a touchdown on its opening possession of the second half in four of five games, including each of its past three. Those three scoring drives each covered 75 yards.

The Wildcats’ defense has been just as effective coming out of the locker room, forcing a punt on the opponent’s first second-half possession in all five games.

But LSU has been even more dominant in the third quarter.

The Tigers have outscored opponents 76-17 in the period, including a combined 48-3 against Clemson, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. They’ve outscored all opponents 121-39 in the second half.

Kiffin believes his team has improved at making adjustments and playing through adversity, though he wants it to start faster.

Stein wants something similar.

“We got to play better all four quarters,” he said. “I definitely want to see us play a complete game on Saturday. I think that’s vital to our success, especially versus these guys.”

Both coaches have demonstrated an ability to identify weaknesses and exploit them after halftime.

Saturday, they’ll be trying to do it against each other.

4. Can Kentucky’s defense hold up against LSU’s offense — and the weather?

The Tigers lead the SEC in total offense at 547.8 yards per game and average 43.6 points.

They’ve scored 19 rushing touchdowns, the most in the country. Wisconsin transfer Dilin Jones leads the rushing attack, while Harlem Berry and Stacy Gage give Kiffin additional options.

Leavitt is dangerous outside the pocket, and LSU has receivers capable of producing explosive plays.

That’s a difficult assignment for a Kentucky defense dealing with injuries and depth concerns.

Stein acknowledged that six defensive starters played at least 70 snaps against South Carolina, and that the Wildcats need more depth, particularly up front.

The bigger concern may be tackling mobile quarterbacks.

South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers repeatedly escaped Kentucky defenders, and Stein acknowledged that the Wildcats have struggled to contain scrambling quarterbacks all season.

Now comes Leavitt, who has rushed for 220 yards and six touchdowns.

“You got to be able to contain these guys,” Stein said. “It’s not like there’s giant explosive runs from running backs right now. It’s literally quarterback scrambles.”

The weather could complicate matters.

Remnants of Hurricane Isaias are expected to bring bands of showers, possible thunderstorms and gusty winds into Lexington Saturday afternoon and evening. Forecasts have suggested gusts approaching 30 mph, including winds blowing from the east end zone.

Rain and wind could affect the passing game, kicking decisions and ball security. The forecast should be monitored as kickoff approaches.

Kentucky might welcome conditions that make LSU’s offense less predictable. But there’s a catch: The Wildcats would have to play in those conditions, too.

From the Game Notes

A rare opportunity: Kentucky is facing its third AP Top 10 opponent in six games. The Wildcats lost to Alabama, beat Texas A&M and now host LSU. A victory would give Stein two Top 10 wins in his first six games as a head coach.

Stein’s road success: Stein is the first Kentucky coach to win his first two SEC road games. The Wildcats defeated Texas A&M and South Carolina away from Lexington.

Darby’s breakout: Freshman receiver Kenny Darby caught 12 passes against South Carolina, a Kentucky freshman record. The Louisiana native and former LSU recruiting commitment leads Kentucky with 25 receptions for 322 yards and three touchdowns.

Tight end production: Kentucky’s tight ends have 37 receptions through five games, their most at this stage of a season since 2000. Willie Rodriguez has 22 catches, the most by a Kentucky tight end through five games since Derek Smith had 25 in 2000.

An LSU reunion: Kentucky receiver Nic Anderson, defensive lineman Ahmad Breaux and offensive tackle Lance Heard previously played for LSU. Kentucky offensive coordinator Joe Sloan served in the same role at LSU the previous two seasons.

The second-half defense: LSU’s first-team defense has allowed only one second-half touchdown this season, according to Kiffin.

Defensive playmakers: Kentucky linebacker Grant Godfrey and safety Jordan Castell share the team lead with 42 tackles. Castell also has two interceptions, tied for the SEC lead according to Kentucky’s game notes.

LSU Famous Alum: Ruth Fertel. If you’ve ever enjoyed a steak at Ruth’s Chris Steak House, you can thank an LSU graduate. Fertel was a divorced mother of two when she mortgaged her home in 1965 to buy a small New Orleans restaurant called Chris Steak House. She knew little about the restaurant business but plenty about determination. When a fire forced her to relocate, she couldn’t take the original restaurant’s name with her, so she added her own. Ruth’s Chris Steak House was born. She eventually built it into one of America’s best-known steakhouse chains, famous for serving steaks sizzling on 500-degree plates. Not bad for a woman who started with a $22,000 investment and a willingness to bet on herself.

Crawford’s Pick

LSU 31, Kentucky 24

There’s a temptation to pick Kentucky here, and not just because the Tigers have a history of strange experiences in Lexington.

Stein has changed the energy around this program. The Wildcats have shown an ability to adjust, to rally and to make winning plays in difficult circumstances. Minchey is playing with confidence, and Kentucky has already beaten one team it wasn’t supposed to beat.

But LSU is a different problem.

The Tigers have too much defensive talent, too much speed on the edge and too many ways to move the football. Kentucky’s third-down problems are especially concerning against a defense that gets to the quarterback as effectively as LSU does.

And although the Wildcats have shown remarkable resilience, they’ve also struggled to play four complete quarters. Against this opponent, that could be costly.

The weather may keep things interesting. So might Leavitt’s tendency to throw interceptions.

I expect Kentucky to compete, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wildcats have the ball in the fourth quarter with a chance to make things uncomfortable.

But I’m not ready to call Kentucky the next Indiana. Beat LSU, and perhaps we can start having that conversation.

For now, I think the Tigers have just enough to spoil the Power K homecoming.
