ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - An active duty soldier stationed at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks has been arrested after being accused of sexually abusing a teenager.

Michael Murray, 22, was arrested Tuesday after Alaska State Troopers received a report in early October that someone underage had been sexually abused by an adult for multiple months, a dispatch from the department said.

An investigation led troopers to Murray, a soldier under the command of U.S. Army Alaska. He was charged with four counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor.

The dispatch did not specify if the abuse happened on Fort Wainwright. Alaska’s News Source has reached out to troopers, Fort Wainwright public relations officials and Murray’s public defender’s office for more information.

“Our leadership is aware of the arrest that took place off post, and we are cooperating with the Alaska State Troopers,” said Eve Baker, a spokesperson from the media and community relations department at Fort Wainwright. “Because this is an active investigation, we cannot share any additional information at this time.”

Murray was taken to the Fairbanks Correctional Center, where he is currently in custody, according to a spokesperson with the Alaska Department of Corrections. Online court records show Murray was arraigned at the Fairbanks Courthouse Wednesday afternoon. A preliminary hearing in his case is scheduled for next month.

Troopers said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be filed.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated after Alaska’s News Source was able to confirm Murray is an active duty solider with the U.S. Army of Alaska and to include a statement from Fort Wainwright.
