Being pregnant is quite the experience as your body goes through so many changes from start to finish and even afterward. It’s HARD to find clothing that fits sometimes or to feel fashionable in maternity wear.
That’s where we come in to offer tips on how to feel cute no matter which trimester you’re going through.
Speaking from personal experience and seasoned mamas who know a thing or two about how to stay cute with a bump, we’ve got you covered with the wardrobe essentials.
Leggings
Leggings are a godsend when you’re pregnant. Since they’re stretchy, you can usually wear the ones you already had for a while until your bump gets too big, or you can go up a size, which may be good enough. If there’s not enough give on the belly, maternity leggings are designed to accommodate a growing stomach and look just as good.
All different colors, materials, designs—you name it! They’re probably the number one wardrobe essential because you can wear leggings in any season, for the most part, and with various footwear. Above all, they’re comfy!
Sundress
Who doesn’t love a classic sundress? We’re talking about the flowy, billowy dresses that can be long or short, perfect for a day out in the spring or summer. You won’t be too hot (being pregnant in the summer is torturous as is) since the material is usually lightweight, and they look incredibly cute on a bump of any size.
It’s elegant, provides a lot of room to move around without feeling constricted, and is another option with different colors and prints to choose from. A sundress is also easy to get on and off, which you’ll learn is crucial in the waning months of pregnancy!
Belly Band
A belly band isn’t necessarily stylish, but it’s practical. Here’s why we included it: for moms of multiples or who develop a larger pregnancy bump, you’re going to want something to relieve the pressure off your back and pelvis. You can wear a belly band underneath stylish clothing, such as fitted tops or dresses.
It also allows expectant mothers to continue wearing their pre-pregnancy bottoms for longer by providing a smooth layer over unbuttoned pants or skirts. Overall, a belly band is a versatile and discreet solution for enhancing comfort while maintaining a fashionable appearance.
Maxi Skirt
A maxi skirt is clutch when you consider how you can wear it in various settings, from a business casual event to a day out with friends. Paired with a fitted maternity top or a loose blouse, a maxi skirt creates a flattering look that can be dressed up or down with accessories.
Again, the key is to find something that isn’t squeezing your belly but still feels secure and lets you bend and move around with ease. Many moms love the versatility and comfort of a maxi skirt and say it’s their go-to when they hit around 6 or 7 months.
Jumpsuit/Romper
Jumpsuits and rompers are the perfect choice for early pregnancy when you’re just starting to show. They come in different types of materials, but the breathable cotton ones are best. The waist is often cinched or comes with a belt, so they’re not the greatest choice when you feel like you’re “about to pop.”
Nonetheless, it’s one of those clothing options that you can get really creative with and wear it until you’re no longer comfortable. We love rompers with cute sneakers, wedge sandals, or Vans, and stud earrings to bring it full circle. It’s cute and hassle-free.
Boyfriend Button-downs
Oversized shirts can be styled in so many ways, and boyfriend button downs are no exception. One of the most trendy ways to wear a button down is with leggings, bike shorts, or maternity jeans. A cute necklace, hoop earrings, a messy bun, and an oversized bag will do the trick.
There are also multiple ways that you can wear the shirt. Some people rock it with a belt above the bump, which accentuates the waist, tucked in on one side, slightly unbuttoned down the front—the possibilities are endless!
Stretchy Tank Tops
We love a good stretchy tank top that fits comfortably over your pregnant belly and pairs beautifully with gauchos or jeans. Of course, you can wear a tank top with pretty much any bottom, but these are amongst the most popular options.
Tank tops are also excellent for layering under cardigans, jackets, or even other tops for added style. Some are more like camisoles, while others have frilly lower halves or straps. They can be worn with a simple pair of leggings or jeans for a casual but chic look.
Jean Jacket
Everyone needs a jean jacket in their closet. It can transform an outfit consisting of a basic pair of neutral-colored leggings and a tank top into something a little more edgy. You can get a dark or light denim jacket and a pair of Chuck Taylors, and you’re good to go.
Or, throw it over a maxi dress for a casual boho vibe. It works throughout your pregnancy journey; as your bump grows, just leave it unbuttoned for a relaxed vibe. It’s also great for those in between seasons when you need a little extra warmth but don’t want to sacrifice style.
Neck Scarf
When you’re feeling extra fancy, grab a neck scarf. It’s a small accessory with a big impact. It immediately elevates your outfit to make it look more polished. A lot of mamas love to wear a neck scarf with a jean jacket and a simple tee beneath or with a maxi dress.
From a practical perspective, you can use it to keep warm on chilly days or to add a pop of color and pattern to your outfit. Wear it around your neck, tie it as a headband, or even loop it around your bag for a touch of flair. A silk neck scarf is a game-changer when it comes to adding personality and charm to your maternity wear.
Maternity Tunic Top
Maternity tunic tops aren’t expensive, and we love how they drape over your bump provides comfort and room to grow.
There’s always the go-to with leggings or skinny jeans for a casual and put-together look, or make it dressier by adding a pair of tailored pants or a skirt for a more upscale vibe. These cute tunics come in a range of colors, patterns, and fabrics, so you can easily find one that suits your personal style.
Maternity Overalls
Maternity overalls might not scream chic, and we get it, overalls can be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing, but we’ve got a soft spot for their quirky charm.
They give you all the breathing room you need around your midsection, possibly even more so than leggings. They’re cute with a comfy t-shirt underneath and some sneakers; plus, they have that effortless, playful vibe that’s hard to resist.
Maternity Swimwear
If you’re pregnant during the summer, you may want to hit the beach to spend some time relaxing your body and mind. You could buy regular swimwear and just push the bottoms beneath your bump.
Instead, we say go for maternity swimwear designed to give you support without making your belly feel hot. There are some very stylish designs out there for one or two-piece swimsuits that’ll make your time out in the sun more enjoyable.
High-waisted Maternity Jeans
High-waisted maternity jeans offer support and style in one. The stretchy fabric and supportive waistband will be beneficial for the duration of your pregnancy journey. The high waist design flatters your growing belly and helps smooth out any lumps or bumps.
High-waisted jeans look amazing with fitted tops for a streamlined look, flowy blouses for a relaxed vibe, or crop tops for a more youthful and trendy outfit. You can also layer them with oversized sweaters or blazers for added style. Accessories like belts and statement jewelry can complete the look and add your personal touch.
Belt
A belt is such a simple but much needed fashion accessory, especially if you’re pregnant. Opt for stretchy or adjustable styles that sit comfortably above or below your bump to add definition to your midsection.
Wear them with dresses, tunics, or even oversized tops, or cinch in loose-fitting garments to switch up your look. Belts can also be a versatile addition that allows you to add some color or texture to your outfit while accommodating your changing shape throughout pregnancy.
Blazer
A blazer incorporates a polished touch to any outfit, whether you’re dressing for work or a special occasion. You can wear it buttoned by choosing a maternity blazer with stretchy fabric to accommodate your growing stomach comfortably.
Maybe wear it with jeans or trousers for a chic office look, or layer it over a dress for a more sophisticated vibe. You could also buy a regular blazer that doesn’t have much give, but it wouldn’t matter if you’re going to leave it open. Either way, blazers are timeless!
Sneakers
You’re going to need a comfortable pair of sneakers during your pregnancy. That’s a non-negotiable. Some women are extra stylish, and they can stand to wear heels even late into the third trimester. Others of us aren’t so lucky and can’t tolerate the pain.
Might as well grab some nice white leather sneakers or whatever color suits your preferences to match with jeans, dresses, skirts, jumpsuits, and anything else you pull from the closet. Pregnant or not, you’ll always want to keep some chic sneaks in your arsenal.
Linen Drawstring Shorts/Pants
Linen drawstring shorts and pants are such a great option while pregnant. The adjustable drawstring provides comfort, while the loose and airy fit offers room for your baby bump. Play around with different looks, but extra-large, flowy tops or button-downs are excellent pairings for a cute and comfy look that’s perfect for any stage of pregnancy.
For footwear, consider sandals or espadrilles for a laid-back summer look, or dress them up with wedges or block heels for a more dressy style. Finish it off with statement jewelry or a wide-brimmed hat. Go with the natural texture of linen by keeping accessories simple and selecting earthy tones or soft pastels.
Birkenstock Sandals
Birkenstock sandals are a staple for a reason—they’re comfy and versatile, and you can match them with anything from denim shorts to flowy dresses for a laid-back, stylish look.
The contoured footbed feels like a memory foam pillow for your foot, making these shoes ideal for all-day wear during pregnancy. You can buy them in a range of colors and styles for any outfit or occasion.
Knee-high Boots
We love a good pair of knee-high boots! For all the mamas that are pregnant during the fall, get a pair of knee-high boots that will elevate even the most basic outfit. If you’re wearing something that’s dressy but you can’t put on heels, the knee-high boot is the solution to keep it classy.
Some of our favorite ways to wear them include with leggings or skinny jeans for a sleek look that elongates the legs. While pregnant you want to choose styles that have a low or chunky heel for added stability and support.
Elodie Cable Knit Sweater
Depending on where you shop, the Elodie sweater is a budget-friendly gem that exceeds expectations. It’s a cozy essential for any maternity wardrobe, keeping you warm and looking good during cooler seasons.
The chunky knit design adds texture and interest to your ensemble, while the plush feel and resistance to pilling, even after washing, make it a standout. Plus, its cropped length is perfect for flaunting your bump when paired with maternity leggings or a dress.
Joggers
Joggers are a must-have during pregnancy. Unlike leggings, sweats and joggers usually have more forgiving waistbands, making it easy to wear them comfortably under the bump. All you have to do is grab a maternity tank for a relaxed look.
Sometimes, you’ll be feeling kind of “blah.” To make yourself okay with the loungewear look during the day, stick to a true athleisure vibe or opt for black and neutral hues for a more intentional feel. You can also dress them up with a blazer or a stylish jacket.
Racerback Midi Dress
One of our favorite maternity pieces is the racerback midi dress. The racerback design gives you a sporty touch, but the midi length is more chic; it’s the perfect combo.
We think this looks super cute with your favorite pair of white sneakers, a small purse that you can wear on your shoulder, sunglasses, and a cardigan wrapped around your waist. You could also choose sandals for a casual daytime outfit or heels and jewelry for a night out.
Wrap Coat
We’re huge fans of the wrap coat as a sophisticated and practical essential. You get style and functionality; what’s not to love? The adjustable wrap design allows for a customizable fit as your body changes from one trimester to the next.
The classic silhouette and timeless appeal gives you a more elegant feel to your outfit, in any setting. Wrap coats go with pretty much anything, but we’ll suggest jeans and a sweater for a daytime look, or layer it over a dress for warmth and a classy vibe. Don’t forget the knee-high boots!
Belt Bag
A belt bag is a stylish and practical accessory for a maternity wardrobe, offering convenience and keeping your hands free. You wear it around your waist to keep essential items like your keys, phone, and wallet easily accessible without adding extra weight or strain.
There are a number of cute and adjustable styles that you can wear at various stages of pregnancy. We’re always going to advocate for fashion items that allow you to move freely and comfortably as you’re carrying your bundle of joy. Near the end of your journey, you’ll be so glad you don’t have to fumble around with a purse while you’re out and about.
