Blinds come in many forms to suit different needs. Cellular shades have insulating properties to help keep homes cool during Houston's hot summers. If you have small children or pets, cordless or motorized designs offer safe alternatives to traditional drawstrings. There are also blinds specifically designed for outdoor living spaces like porches, which are common around Houston. Below are some types of blinds common to Houston, along with their pros and cons.

Blinds Type	Average Cost	Pros	Cons
Roller	$25–$350	Budget-friendly, low-maintenance	Limited insulation capabilities
Vertical	$65– $350	Functional for large windows or sliders	Dated appearance
Cellular	$65–$380	Insulated for comfort and energy savings	Low durability
Roman	$65–$400	Filters out UV rays to protect furnishings	Collects dust easily
Cordless	$30–$330	Safe for children and pets	Difficult to repair
Motorized or electric	$400–$600	Convenience	High cost
Outdoor blinds	$90–$300	Specifically designed for outdoor spaces	Require additional maintenance

Blinds can be made from various materials that differ in cost, appearance, and functionality. The table below lists the most common materials for blinds in Houston homes, including their pros and cons.

Material	Average Cost	Pros	Cons
Synthetic	$40–$140	Withstands Houston’s humidity	Tend to be heavier

Aluminum	$40–$180	Lightweight and durable	Noisy when adjusted
Wood	$45–$350	Durable with a refined look	High cost and high maintenance
Faux wood	$45–$250	Low maintenance	Looks slightly unnatural

Standard drapes	$50–$300
Luxury drapes	$500–$3,000
Standard shades	$55–$250

Blinds Installation Pro Costs in Houston

Labor alone costs between $140 and $400 when you hire a blinds installer near you. This averages out to about $15 to $50 per window. You can also hire a local handyperson to complete the work. Projects that involve custom or built-in blinds will fall on the higher end of these cost ranges.

Permits are typically not required for blinds installation in Houston. However, you’ll need a permit for electrical work, such as changes to wiring, which may be necessary if you have motorized blinds installed.

Professional window treatment installation often includes the cost of removing and disposing of old blinds. If not, this service will be listed as a separate line item, usually at a rate of $10 to $30 per window.

Installing new blinds is not likely to impact home value in Houston. However, you can use new blinds to improve your home's curb appeal, which may make it more appealing to a broader range of potential buyers. If you want to improve your home's appearance, avoid inexpensive plastic blinds or faux wood styles, which may come off as cheap-looking.

One possible way to recoup your investment in new blinds is through energy savings. To maximize efficiency, choose well-insulated materials and styles such as cellular shades.
