World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will miss the rest of the season with a lingering right knee injury, the Italian player announced in a social media video shared on Tuesday.
“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment on my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Jannik Sinner explained in an Instagram video.
Sidelined from tour-level competition after retaining the Wimbledon title in July due to an ongoing right knee injury, the five-time major champion's 2026 season has officially come to an end.
“The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be way different," he remarked, as he will miss the ATP Finals.
Now, the 25-year-old shifts focus to his recovery process from the tendinopathy.
“At the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career. I will do everything possible to get back to 100 percent," he concluded.
It is a bittersweet end to a season in which the 30-time ATP title holder completed the Career Golden Masters on home soil, clinching five Masters 1000 in a row: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo (reclaimed world No. 1), Madrid and Rome.
At the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, he surged to victory, joining Novak Djokovic as the only two players to win all nine Masters 1000 tournaments since 1990.
After Wimbledon, he missed back-to-back Masters 1000 events in the North American summer swing, as well as the US Open.
Most recently, he withdrew from Beijing, eventually ending his season early.
Discussing Sinner's decision, Angelo Binaghi, President of the Federazione Italiana Tennis e Padel (FITP), stated: "Protecting Jannik’s physical well-being comes before any result or competitive commitment.
"The Federation will stand by his side, as always."
The No. 1 Italian player finished 2026 with 44 wins, losing only three singles matches, having captured six titles overall.
