World No. 6 Flavio Cobolli secured an emphatic straight-sets win over three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka to reach the quarterfinals at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes on Thursday.

Top seed Flavio Cobolli launched his campaign in Lyon with a flawless showing, outlasting former world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 in 67 minutes.

In his on-court interview, the Italian player addressed the three-time major champion on his farewell season, saying: "It was a pleasure to share the court with you today.

"I was a little bit more nervous than the other times. You make me nervous because you are not a simple player, but a legend of our sport."

In their third meeting at tour level, Cobolli started strong behind his serve; the Italian did not concede a point during his first two service games.

In the fifth game, he found breathing room to convert the break and held to move ahead 4-2.

Striking the ball cleanly on the forehand, he imposed his game, breaking twice to extend his advantage.

Then, he navigated out of danger when serving for the set, fending off a break point before sealing the opener 6-2 in just 25 minutes.

As the second set wore on, they rallied, with the 24-year-old proving too effective at the net.

The 2026 Roland Garros runner-up became a wall on his side of the court, coming to the net often to neutralize his opponent.

In the third game, however, a rare feat stole the spotlight as the young Italian broke strings in half of the points and still managed to win two of them, converting a break in the process.

Trailing 1-3, Wawrinka stepped up the pressure, keeping his chances alive by grabbing a lengthy seventh game with an ace, down 3-4.

The top seed's ferocious ball-striking pushed him closer to the finish line.

In the 10th game, he served for the match to pocket the set 6-4, ending a four-match losing streak with consistency.

The victory was his first on Tour since his third-round exit at the US Open.

Overall, the Florence native hit 22 winners (18 on the forehand) against 15 unforced errors, converted three of four break points and won 87 percent of the points on his first serve.

Cobolli awaits the winner of the clash between fifth seed Brandon Nakashima and local hope Kyrian Jacquet.

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old Swiss will head to Basel next week to play at the Swiss Indoors, the penultimate tournament of an illustrious career.
