Top seed Alexander Zverev survived a stern test posed by world No. 22 Alexander Bublik to secure his first win as Year-End World No. 1, advancing to his 40th Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Shanghai.
Two-time major champion Alexander Zverev rallied past 19th seed Alexander Bublik, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1), in a two-hour, 37-minute thriller to reach the Rolex Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The German player was made to work by the former world No. 10 before earning his first win as the new Year-End World No. 1.
They went toe-to-toe in an edgy first-set tiebreak, with the 29-year-old fending off four set points to take the lead.
Both players stayed solid behind their serve, with small margins to separate them throughout.
Bublik regrouped in the second set, making the most of his net play, winning 100 percent of his net approaches.
Moreover, the Kazakh player found breathing room to break his adversary's serve, tying the contest at one set apiece.
Zverev struggled physically, as he would later reveal: "My ankle was acting up, unfortunately. It was kind of understandable because I have been playing a lot of tennis, which is a good sign because I have been playing well."
In a gruelling decider, the Hamburg native bounced back from an early break, quickly recovering lost ground and holding to open a 2-1 advantage.
From there, the set went on serves, leading to a tiebreak, which Zverev dominated to wrap up proceedings.
He fired 49 winners against 23 unforced errors, converted one of six break points and won 81 percent of the points on his first serve.
Zverev will next meet Beijing runner-up Alex de Minaur, who earlier in the day outplayed 26th seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last eight.
The US Open reigning champion leads the Australian 8-4 in the series.
Guaranteed to finish the season as world No. 1 for the first time in his career, the world No. 2 is seeking to capture his 27th career title in Shanghai.
With Carlos Alcaraz falling to Belgian Zizou Bergs in straight sets, Zverev became the first German player to secure the year-end No. 1 on Monday.
“It’s been a fantastic season for me, winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," he expressed.
"So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury. I look forward to finishing the season in style.”
