I'm a freelance journalist covering stories on science & tech issues that affect... well, humans. Like:

  • Human rights and inequality
  • Racial and gender discrimination
  • Disinformation and online abuse
  • Corruption and negligence
  • Emergencies, conflict and disasters
  • Threats to democracy and freedom
  • Public health risks
  • Cultural movements and ethics

I have a knack for in-depth stories:

  • I can do shorter pieces, but I love a deep dive into a complex or obscure issue that has to be addressed carefully. No shortcuts, no AI, just hands-on journalism to craft a well-documented, easy-to-digest feature.

And I love engaging storytelling:

  • I enjoy the challenge of keeping a long story neat, nuanced and interesting. Colourful scenes, good pacing, character building... I love the powerful simplicity of a good written piece that lingers in your head and makes you see the world differently.
  • I plan for the digital world (budget permitting): scripts, videos, interviews, podcasts, newsletters, data visualisations, interactive features... you name it.

I'm based in Spain, so I usually cover Spanish or European stories that can resonate in other parts of the world (in Spanish or English).

Like my story on the Spanish housing crisis, which was published by WIRED en español and had a big impact in many parts of Latin America where gentrification is also rampant. Or the story on the racist attacks in the small town of Torre Pacheco, which illustrates the international scale of the networks promoting online hate.

Most of my published work is in Spanish, but I can send English translations of selected stories on request.

Fun fact: I'm also a bit Canadian, and I don't mind travelling, so I cover on-site news across Europe (Brussels, Dublin, Germany...) or Canada upon request.

Can't find much on my social media? Yes, I value my privacy and I often work for third parties. But I'm constantly monitoring it as part of my job, so feel free to get in touch or follow me. I tend to repost a lot.

Transparency note: I also work as a press officer at Agata Communications, so I don't write about or pitch stories involving its clients as a journalist. One of them is the European Quantum Flagship, so sadly all quantum-related topics are off-limits for me (more on my LinkedIn).

Pitching a story or commissioning a piece? Write to me at catagrebollo (at) gmail.com. If your message includes sensitive information, please check my Contact page for how to reach me securely.

I’m always happy to chat.
