There’s only one Clutch. The career arc traced by the Maryland foursome of Neil Fallon, Jean-Paul Gaster, Dan Maines, and Tim Sult doesn’t look like that of any other rock band, and the sound they’ve spent all that time tirelessly tinkering with is as fundamentally malleable as it is utterly singular. Clutch doesn’t belong to a subgenre or a scene, and all attempts to pigeonhole them into one inevitably backfire. They’re simply Clutch, the hardest working rock band in America, and their fourteenth studio album is called Wasted Lands.

Clutch formed in the D.C. suburbs in 1991, in the long shadow of the legendary hardcore scene headlined by Dischord Records acts like Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses. Even in those early days, Clutch were used to being square pegs. Record labels didn’t know what to do with them, and they frequently wound up on bills with bands they sounded nothing like, in part because no other bands actually sounded like them. “When we started off, I felt like we were in the same genre as Helmet, the Melvins, Amphetamine Reptile, stuff like that,” Sult says. “I was probably wrong.”

After the release of 1993’s Transnational Speedway League, the band’s scorching, hardcore-influenced debut LP, they set about building their long-standing reputation as a consummate live act. The true Clutch was born on the road—both onstage, where the energy of the crowds provided real-time feedback, and on the long-haul drives that would follow the gigs. “We just started touring, and buying tapes at truck stops, and driving all night in our van, and listening to stuff like the Allman Brothers, and jazzy kind of stuff. That just immediately influenced the second album,” Sult says.

That 1995 album was self-titled, and it declared Clutch’s independence. Here was a band that would follow their muse wherever it took them in the years to come, through hardcore punk, noise rock, stoner doom, Memphis blues, classic country, funky go-go, and anything else that’s inspired them. None of their genre experiments have been cynically motivated by audience expectations or industry demands. They still answer only to themselves. “I think it’s vital to just continue doing what we do, in the same way we’ve been doing it,” Fallon insists. “Which is self-absorbed, but artists have to be self-absorbed. Once you start thinking about the way people react, it’s no longer art, it’s marketing. And we don’t want to do that.”

With Wasted Lands, the first Clutch full-length since 2022’s Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, the band’s muse was telling them to make, in Gaster’s words, “a bangin’ rock record.” The COVID-era Slaughter Beach had been a slight anomaly in the Clutch catalog, written and recorded when the future of live music felt uncertain. The first two batches of songs the band wrote for its follow-up were ultimately scrapped for being too “weird for weird’s sake.” They liked the material they had written, but it was clear they needed a recalibration. “I think we arrived at the conclusion that this is not going to translate great live,” Fallon says. “It was becoming much more of a studio creation, and we realized we didn’t want to do that.”

“I think the biggest change between what we were writing at the beginning of the writing process and what we were writing towards the end, and what ended up being on the album, was just a much more up-tempo, kind of in-your-face songwriting style,” Maines adds.

Once the band felt good about the direction for the new album, the songs flowed with ease. There’s no single, predictable way that a Clutch song begins, but they’re almost always finished in the jam room at the Doom Saloon, the band’s longtime practice space and base of operations in Frederick, Maryland. “The four of us get in a room, and we just take a few raw materials, and then 45 minutes later, there’s a song. And then we go on to the next one,” Gaster says. “We wrote like that for many months.”

Even with their mandate to make high-energy rock songs that would sound good onstage, Clutch found ways to introduce new wrinkles, and to keep the songwriting process interesting. “Beware the Fever” marks the first appearance of banjo on a Clutch record, played by Fallon. Incredibly, the banjo recording that appears on the album version of the song was only ever meant to be a proof-of-concept demo.

“Neil and I got together one afternoon, and I just put up this beat, sort of a mid-tempo, almost hip-hop beat that I had recorded, and he just started fooling around on banjo,” Gaster recalls. “And literally, that lick that he came up with happened within the first two minutes of him playing. I just stuck a microphone in front of the banjo and made no attempt to sort of get any kind of good levels or any kind of good sound.”

“It was just miked with an SM57, I think,” Fallon says. “I was like, ‘This isn’t gonna be on the record, so who cares?’ Well, lo and behold, it is on the record, and it’s a single. We tried retracking it, and it sounded too clean. I think it was just sort of the happy accident of it that gave it that cool vibe.”

Another experiment was the idea of building punchy rock songs from melodic chord progressions rather than individual guitar riffs. Sult is a true master of the riff; sit him in a room with a guitar for an hour and you’ll get 50 of them. Yet he sounds invigorated talking about breaking out of his songwriting habits for Wasted Lands. In the past, if Clutch was basing a song around a chord progression, it was typically going to be a mellower number—think “Our Lady of Electric Light” from Psychic Warfare or “Ghost” from Blast Tyrant. On Wasted Lands, a new Clutch song style emerges, typified by hard-hitting tracks like “Stage Fright,” “Loaf and Jug,” and what Sult considers the skeleton key to the whole album, “Colorado Fuel and Iron.”

“‘Colorado Fuel and Iron,’ I would say, kind of dictated the whole direction of the album in some ways,” Sult says. “The melodic chorus in that song, especially. We had a few other songs with the same style, a four-chord little chord progression. A lot of the earlier stuff is just riffs to your face the entire time, and I think, this time, we tried to put more melodic chord progressions along with the riffs.”

Clutch recorded for a fifth time with the acclaimed producer Machine, whom the members have variously described as “a whip-cracker,” “a ball-buster,” and “an ass-kicker.” If it wasn’t clear, they all absolutely love working with him. “He is very good at listening to each player’s individual parts and making suggestions,” Maines says. “Usually, it’s something as simple as, ‘It would be great if we heard a unique fill here,’ or ‘Maybe this would be a good point to move the song into a different key.’ I think he has a very good understanding of our songwriting process. He’s a fan of the band. I think he has a very good sense of how we operate, what our strengths are.”

Machine also knows when to stand down and let Clutch do what they do best. Gaster remembers a disagreement over a drum part on Wasted Lands’ pulse-pounding title track. “There’s a part where Neil says, ‘Vegetable, mineral, man, or beast.’ And I put a bass drum on, ‘man or beast,’ and Machine thought that was kind of weird. He was like, ‘Man, you’re covering up the vocal!’ And I said, ‘No, that bass drum is gonna make the crowd go nuts, I guarantee it.’ And it does, because there’s nothing more exciting than having a big bass drum slam through a PA, and Neil singing a vocal on top of it. I mean, I get goosebumps from that, you know?”

Fallon’s vocals, as with every other Clutch record, are crucial to the magic of Wasted Lands. He’s long been one of rock’s finest lyricists, and the push-pull between his wordy, literary writing style and the band’s all-out rock assault is the engine that makes Clutch go. Moments like those bass drum hits on “Wasted Lands” showcase how effectively the band accentuates his strengths. He sounds as good as ever on Wasted Lands, whether he’s singing in his deep, melodic register or unleashing staccato syllables like he’s punching the speed bag.

Predictably, Fallon’s lyrics for Wasted Lands cover a ton of ground, but an overarching theme that stands out is the exploitation of labor, a subject he addresses on at least three songs on the record. “Colorado Fuel and Iron” was inspired by a road trip along Highway 50, where Fallon’s wife is from. “There’s a lot of damage there along 50,” he says. “There’s damage to the environment. The amount of stomach cancer that people have going along the river there is just astronomical. And the steel mill is still there. It was owned by a robber baron, Rockefeller, and then now, Abramovich, which I think is a very typical story. Those men have no connection to the side effects of their enterprise, and they don’t have to. But now, it’s gonna go on for generations.”

“‘Beware the Fever” is, I guess, maybe more of a supernatural take on that,” Fallon continues. “That takes place in a region like Appalachia, or maybe central Pennsylvania. There’s a lot of spooky towns. They’re ghost towns, and there’s people that live in them. We drive through them all the time, and you can see that the high-water mark of that town was maybe 80 years ago. There’s a lot of weird shit that goes on there.”

“Chestburster” is literally about Ridley Scott’s Alien, but with Fallon’s acerbic delivery of, “Who are we to get between a corporation and their bottom line?,” it’s clear that H.R. Giger’s creature effects aren’t the only thing on his mind. “The whole mythos of that world, of Weyland-Yutani, is it’s this giant corporation, and it’s still the same damn story,” Fallon says. “It’s not true, it’s in space, in the future, but I think it just speaks to the human condition. I’m not coming at this from a political standpoint. I’m just pointing these things out that are facts, and then putting them in a little world called a song, and running with it.”

The final piece of the Wasted Lands puzzle is its impressive suite of visuals, and its stark, black-and-white album cover is the keystone. Inspired equally by the provocative art direction of Swans and Godflesh and the classy, text-heavy house style of Blue Note Records, Fallon and graphic designer Dave Kezer came up with the idea of presenting the band name, album title, and personnel in an elegant font alongside a monstrous photo of an alligator. “It’s absurd,” Fallon says with evident pride. “It looks terrifying, but it’s also kind of hilarious, at least in my sense of humor. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but I like it.”

“Another thing is people have become very sensitive to AI, and rightly so,” he adds. “I wanted people to look at this album and not even have that word cross their mind. And I think we accomplished that. I mean, there’s a spider on the back of it, and I took that picture with my iPhone. So I’ve got a photo credit now, too.”

Fallon isn’t the most accomplished photographer associated with Wasted Lands. That would be Dan Winters, who has been shooting Clutch since 1993, in between gigs at Esquire, GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and more. Their long relationship began when Clutch’s label for Transnational Speedway League asked them to go through a pile of photo CVs to pick who they’d want to shoot the band. “I didn’t know shit about photography,” Gaster says. “We looked at them, and they all just kind of looked the same to me. There wasn’t any one thing that really stuck out, until we saw Dan Winters’ book.”

Winters did the photo shoot – Clutch’s first – for Transnational, and they liked him so much they called him again to direct the video for “A Shogun Named Marcus.” That began a decades-long collaboration that has included album covers, publicity shoots, music videos, and more. Just as importantly, it began one of the band’s great friendships.

“They’re so easy to shoot,” Winters says. “They take direction insanely well, and we’ve done it so many times that it’s almost like it’s not work. It’s just hanging out. If I were to categorize my experience working with Clutch, it would be very simpatico, very relaxed, no stress. I’ve never had a problem once on a Clutch shoot. I’ve done a bunch of them, and it’s always just been mutual respect, and the idea that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. I really feel that way.”

All four members agree that the most important change they ever made was to start Weathermaker Music, their own independent record label, which has handled all of Clutch’s releases since 2008. After spending the ’90s and early 2000s being jerked around by labels who didn’t understand the band, they decided to take the power out of the hands of middlemen once and for all. That was the turning point that cleared the path for everything that’s happened since. And although Clutch’s sound has zig-zagged off in a million directions since 1991, the decision to go fully independent was deeply informed by their D.C. punk-kid roots.

“Dischord loomed large, psychologically,” Fallon says. “This is the way you’re supposed to do it if you’re cool. I remember our management at the time was like, ‘When the opportunity knocks, it knocks once, and if you say no, they’re not coming back.’ So we did sign to the major labels, but honestly, the whole time, in the back of my mind, I was like, ‘Wow, Ian MacKaye doesn’t have this problem.’ He might have problems, but they’re his own. And you can wrap your head around those a lot easier than when the problem is coming from the office of someone you’ve never met.”

“A lot of bands would get signed to a major label, they would get dropped, and then they would immediately break up,” Gaster says. “We weren’t scared of that. That wasn’t on our radar at all. We wanted to play shows and make records, and whatever we needed to do to do that, that’s what we did. If the major labels had a little bit of tour support money, we would take it. And then if they said, ‘We don't want to do business with you anymore,’ then we got back in the van, and we just kept going.”

Since founding Weathermaker, Clutch have positioned themselves to keep things going forever—and on their own timeline, not one that’s been arbitrarily imposed by someone who needs to show growth on a spreadsheet to some CEO who doesn’t know rock n’ roll from a hole in the ground. The independence that’s governed everything Clutch has done, from their genre metamorphoses to their ever-changing live setlists to the way they run the business of the band, has brought them to Wasted Lands. It’s an album only they could have made, and they could only make it by continuing to play by their own rules. There’s still only one Clutch, and thank God, they’re still rocking.
