Growing up is hard to do, and Hot Girl Summer is a familiar coming-of-age story with fresh faces and a distinctly female perspective. Female pleasure, and the pursuit of an orgasm, is rarely the focus of coming-of-age films, especially for those who grew up in the 1960s, ’70s, or ’80s, when the subject was largely taboo. It’s difficult to imagine John Hughes venturing into this territory in any of his beloved teen classics.

Director Martina Plura’s contemporary reimagining of the 2001 cult hit Mädchen, Mädchen follows teenage best friends Inken, Vicky, and Lena as they make an earnest pact to solve what they see as their biggest dilemma before summer ends: none of them has ever experienced an orgasm. Compounding their insecurities is the relentless bullying of the seemingly perfect Cheyenne (Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen), whose flawless grades, enviable figure, and effortless popularity make the trio feel like outsiders. United by the fact that none of them fits the mold of the “it” girl, they set out to discover themselves on their own terms.

Inken (Kya-Celina Barucki), who anchors the story, desperately tries to convince her aloof, self-absorbed boyfriend Tim to pay attention to her needs instead of his own, while leaving her devoted childhood friend Flin firmly trapped in the friend zone. Shy, introspective Lena (Nhung Hong) struggles to find the courage to ask out the boy she likes while concealing a deeply personal secret. Vicky (Julia Novohradsky), the boldest and most sexually adventurous of the trio, finds herself dealing with the decidedly unglamorous realities of a yeast infection and an unexpected romantic twist.

As the girls juggle final exams, friendships, first love, and the emotional minefield of adolescence, including the awkward realities of menstruation in a co-ed setting, they gradually discover that understanding their own bodies and desires is every bit as important as finding the elusive G-spot. What begins as a race toward a physical milestone evolves into something far more meaningful.

Especially heartwarming is Inken’s relationship with her father, a single dad navigating his own dating life while his daughter searches for answers of her own. What unfolds is a lighthearted, frequently hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt exploration of growing up, learning what brings you happiness, and deciding who deserves to share those experiences with you.

The screenplay treats female pleasure as neither scandalous nor a punchline, but as a natural and healthy part of adolescence, something mainstream coming-of-age films have historically been reluctant to explore. At its heart, the film is about accepting yourself, embracing your imperfections, and surrounding yourself with friends who celebrate who you are.

The Austrian setting gives Hot Girl Summer a perspective that feels refreshingly different from many American teen comedies. These young women live in a culture that is generally more open about discussing sexuality, allowing the film to approach its subject with candor and humor rather than embarrassment. At the same time, it quietly reminds viewers that in many parts of the world, including socially conservative religious and cultural communities, conversations about female pleasure remain heavily stigmatized. That context makes the film feel quietly groundbreaking without ever becoming preachy.

The young cast, led by Kya-Celina Barucki, Julia Novohradsky, Nhung Hong, and Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen, brings warmth and authenticity to friendships that feel genuine rather than manufactured. Their chemistry elevates the material beyond its cheeky premise, reminding audiences that this isn’t simply a film about sex. It’s about communication, self-confidence, friendship, and the awkward, universal process of discovering who you are.

Ultimately, Hot Girl Summer argues that climaxing isn’t the finish line these young women imagine it to be. Finding your voice, advocating for your own happiness, and building relationships rooted in honesty and respect prove to be the real milestones. Funny, charming, and unexpectedly thoughtful, Martina Plura’s film delivers an empowering coming-of-age story that places young women’s experiences squarely at the center of the conversation.
