I'm lucky enough to live on a large lot in the middle of Los Angeles—nearly 12,000 square feet—which means my kids have plenty of room to play. The downside? Someone has to mow all that grass. Our longtime gardener recently retired, and I've been just disorganized enough not to hire a replacement. Before long, our yard looked more "manic" than "manicured." So when I heard about the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower, which promises to mow your lawn like a professional (and with fewer complaints than a teenager), I couldn't wait to see if it could tame my overgrown yard with minimal effort on my part. I'd also heard the lawn mower was just one of several attachments you can use with the Core. Could this robot help out with gardening and leaf blowing, too?

Pros

Quality, hands-off mowing
Offers mowing customization options
Part of a multifunctional yard robot

Cons

Extremely heavy
Arduous setup process
Sensors aren't always accurate
Best for open, flat spaces

The Yarbo Core is a modular yard robot. The system consists of the Core, which serves as the brain of the operation, and the mower attachment equipped with rotating blades that cut the grass. Beyond mowing, the Core swaps into a fuller lineup of yard modules (each attaches in under two minutes, no tools, and the Core auto-detects which one is on):

Snow blower (heavy-duty snow removal, the winter counterpart to mowing)
Leaf blower (clears leaves and debris)
Trimmer (precision edge finishing along borders)
Tow hitch, included with the Core (hauling mulch, tools, or garden loads; rated up to a 500-lb towing capacity)

Since we tested it with the lawn mower attachment, we'll focus on that in this review.

The Yarbo connects via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and can be programmed to mow on an automated schedule, theoretically letting you cross lawn care off your to-do list for good. While the initial setup is a significant time investment, homeowners with larger properties may find it's worth the effort.

How we tested

We tested the Yarbo Core as it functions as a lawn mower. The Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower arrived in four enormous, heavy boxes that showed up on different days. After the third delivery, my family started joking that another lawn mower had arrived.

Once everything was finally here, I got to work assembling the system. If you're planning to buy a Yarbo, block off a good chunk of your day. It took me about three hours to assemble the robot and get it ready to connect, and that's before I even started configuring the software.

The system includes a Data Center designed to connect directly to your home's internet and mount outside. Because of where our router is located, that wasn't practical for me, so I opted for a wireless connection instead.

Getting everything online proved to be the biggest hurdle. After several frustrating hours of failed connections and GPS issues, I scheduled a call with Yarbo's tech support. They identified the problem—a firmware update—and handled the fix, though it took almost two hours from start to finish. Once everything was connected, I mapped my lawn, set up mowing zones, and scheduled several mowing sessions.

What we like

The Yarbo Core's lawn mower attachment offers homeowners hands-off mowing

Once the initial setup is behind you, the Yarbo is wonderfully hands-off. Schedule the days and times you want it to mow, and it'll leave its charging dock, mow the designated area, and return when it's finished—all without you lifting a finger. Whether you want the lawn cut before you wake up or while you're out running errands, the Yarbo handles it automatically.

The mower features customization options you don't expect

I expected the Yarbo to offer one standard mowing pattern, but I was pleasantly surprised by how customizable it is. You can adjust the cutting height and even choose the mowing pattern, whether you prefer traditional stripes, a checkerboard design, or something else entirely. It's a fun feature that gives your lawn a more polished, professional look, and we haven't seen anything to this extent elsewhere in the robot lawn mower market.

The Core system's multi-functionality—beyond mowing lawns

One of the biggest selling points is that the Core can do more than mow. By swapping out attachments, it can also function as a snow blower or tow small loads around your property. It can blow leaves off your lawn and dethatch. While we haven't tested these capacities yet, it sounds like a homeowner's dream.

I'll probably never need the snow blower in Southern California, but it's reassuring to know the investment in the Core isn't limited to a single task.

What we don't like

As you would imagine, it's extremely heavy

The mower attachment is heavy. I couldn't lift it out of the box or attach it to the Core by myself, so I ended up recruiting my 6-foot, 195-pound husband for help. Even he managed to throw out his back during setup. This isn't a product most people can assemble solo, so make sure you invite a friend over on setup day.

Setup is a project

The setup process is closer to a weekend project than a quick unboxing, but it’s mostly a one-time investment.

I've tested plenty of smart home products over the years, and this was one of the most time-consuming setups I've encountered. Between assembling, updating software, connecting everything, mapping the property, and configuring the mowing zones, I spent close to eight hours getting the Yarbo fully operational. The payoff comes later, but getting there requires patience.

The Core's sensors are too easily fooled

The Yarbo uses sensors to detect obstacles and stop automatically, which is great for safety. Unfortunately, mine also read every crack in my aging driveway as an obstacle. Instead of driving itself to the lawn, it would repeatedly stop, forcing me to manually steer it back to the starting point before each mowing session.

The Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower struggles in tight corners and around landscaping

The Yarbo shines on wide, flat stretches of grass. It struggled with the uneven strip between my sidewalk and the street because of exposed tree roots, and it had trouble navigating the stepping stones and irregular layout in my backyard. If your yard has lots of landscaping, tight corners, or obstacles, your experience won't be seamless.

How the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower stacks up against the robot lawn mower competition

At $3,999 (and up to $4,999 for the full module), the Yarbo Core is the most expensive robot mower we've tested—but it's playing a different game than the rest. Where our top pick, the Ecovacs Goat A3000, tops out at 0.75 acre and even large-lot rivals like the Mammotion LUBA 3 cap around 1.25 acres, the Yarbo covers up to 6 acres with a 20-inch cutting deck. That's more than double the width of the 8- to 16-inch decks on almost every other model, so it chews through big properties far faster.

It also isn't a lawn mower, exactly—it's a modular robot, as we've emphasized. Swap the mower for a snow blower or hauling hitch, and one machine replaces several pieces of seasonal equipment, something no competitor offers.

The trade-offs are real. Setup took close to eight hours (versus the near-plug-and-play Eufy E18), the mower attachment is too heavy to install solo, and its sensors struggle around obstacles and uneven terrain. For a large, flat, open property, nothing else covers as much ground as capably. For a smaller or complex yard, we suggest a wire-free pick like the Goat A3000.

Warranty

Yarbo backs the Core with a two-year limited warranty, which covers defects in materials and workmanship.

Should you buy the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower?

Maybe—it depends on your goals

Whether you should buy the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower depends largely on your year-round yardwork needs. As I've said, the Yarbo isn't just a lawn mower; it's a full-on modular robot, with lawn mowing as one of its capabilities. You can swap the mower for a snow blower, leaf blower, or string trimmer, each sold separately, or use the tow hitch the Core comes with to move heavy items around your property.

For the purposes of this review, I tested the Yarbo Core and its lawn mower attachment, packaged as the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower, although you can purchase all pieces separately. If your property is large, relatively flat, and mostly free of obstacles, the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower can be a genuine time-saver. The setup was demanding; in fact, I'd call it arduous, but once the Yarbo Y Series Lawn Mower is up and running, it does an impressive job of maintaining your lawn with very little day-to-day involvement. It's also a compelling alternative to a riding mower, especially if you'd rather spend your weekends doing something other than cutting grass.

With all the added functionality and the sheer amount of time you'll save in the long term, my setup experience gets much easier to swallow. This one machine replaces several pieces of seasonal equipment, something no competitor offers. If you're willing to invest the time up front, your lawn is a good match, and you foresee using the Core for other tasks, the Yarbo just might be one of the best investments you make. But if you're just looking for a robot lawn mower and you're not dealing with multiple acres, a wire-free pick like Ecovacs' Goat A3000 makes far more sense.

And, in case you're curious, you can buy the Yarbo Core with all its attachments for $8,749.
