The Rundown

Our favorite self-cleaning litter boxes are the PetKit Purobot Ultra Automatic Cat Litter Box and the CatGenie A.I. Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box.
The PetKit Purobot Ultra features an AI camera for health monitoring, facial recognition for multiple cats, and automatically bags and seals waste for a hands-off experience.
The CatGenie A.I. uniquely eliminates traditional litter by washing, flushing, and drying reusable granules, requiring a plumbing hookup for permanent, scoop-free convenience.

Taking care of and disposing of cat litter can be messy and time-consuming. Cats are largely self-sufficient, but they rely on humans to keep their litter boxes tidy, clean, and, most importantly, healthy.

Scooping litter can be dusty, and even more dust gets kicked up as cats enter or exit a litter box, which is where cat litter mats come in handy. Many pet owners are now turning to automatic litter boxes, especially since they don't always have time to clean the litter every day. These smart devices keep litter areas mess-free while making cats and their owners happy.

Amazon offers a range of self-cleaning litter boxes that suit different needs. We researched a variety of products to bring you the best cat litter box with self-cleaning capabilities and to steer you away from the worst. Check out these top-rated devices that can make managing and getting rid of cat litter a breeze.

Here are the best self-cleaning litter boxes you can buy right now.

PetKit Purobot Ultra Automatic Cat Litter Box

Product dimensions: 20.9"W x 32.2"D x 24.1"H
Weight: 32 pounds
Color: White
Price: $899.99

Reviewed's 2025 Best of Year Award winner and CES 2025 Best Self-Cleaning Litter Box award winner does more than handle cleanup—it keeps an eye on your cat's health. The Purobot Ultra mounts a 180-degree rotating AI camera at the box opening that can flag urinary and bowel changes as they start—early warning signs cats are famous for hiding. It also uses AI facial recognition to tell multiple cats apart and logs each one's weight and bathroom habits every visit, so you get a real day-to-day picture of what's going on in a multi-cat home.

When it comes to the actual dirty work, it's hands-off: the Purobot Ultra automatically bags and seals waste so you never have to touch it. A bank of 20 sensors prevents the drum from cycling while a cat is inside.

This is an expensive litter box, but for owners who want health monitoring baked in, nothing else on this list comes close.

Pair this litter box with the Dr. Elsey's Ultra Unscented Clumping Clay Cat Litter.

Pros

Camera with 180° rotation
Identifies health issues
Uses AI facial recognition
Automatically bags and seals waste

Cons

Very expensive
Overkill for single-cat homes on a budget

CatGenie A.I. Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box

Product dimensions: 19.25" W x 24.5" D x 21" H
Weight: 25 pounds
Color: White/Black
Price: $499

The CatGenie A.I. is the only pick here that eliminates litter entirely. Instead of a tray you empty, it uses and reuses, washable granules. After your cat goes, it scoops out the solids, washes the granules with water and a cat-safe SaniSolution, flushes everything down your plumbing, and dries the granules with warm air—leaving the "litter" clean and ready for the next use.

Because it hooks into a cold-water line and a drain, setup is more involved than a standard box, and it needs a spot in a bathroom, laundry, or utility room. But once it's installed, you're done with buying, scooping, and storing litter for good.

An app lets you monitor usage and manage cycles remotely.

Pros

Never buy or scoop litter again
Washes, flushes, and dries automatically
App monitoring and custom cycles

Cons

Requires plumbing/water hookup to install
Large footprint; needs a dedicated spot

OneIsAll Ease S1 Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box

Product dimensions: Open-top design; 11L waste bin
Weight: N/A (modular build)
Color: White
Price: $299.99

The Oneisall Ease S1 tackles two of the biggest gripes about self-cleaning boxes: cleanup and safety. It swaps the usual flimsy plastic sifting tray for a sturdier, easier-to-clean stainless-steel one. The whole structure is modular, so taking it apart for a real scrub-down is far less of a chore than with most sealed units—and we can tell you that from experience.

On the safety front, the Ease S1 uses three separate sensors—radar, weight, and infrared—to track when your cat comes and goes, so any mechanical action only happens when it's safe to do so. Its open-top layout suits cats who dislike being closed in, but we found that some cats don’t like the high-set base and step-up to get in.

At well under $200 on sale, it's one of the more affordable smart boxes here. (Oneisall also sells a Wi-Fi–connected Ease S1 Pro from $229.99 for owners who want app monitoring.)

Pros

Automates a nasty chore
Self-cleans well
Is itself easy for users to clean

Cons

Too high off the ground for many cats
Large in size

Litter-Robot 4 by Whisker

Product dimensions: 22"W x 27"D x 29.5"H (15.75" entryway)
Weight: 24 pounds (empty)
Color: Black or white
Price: From $699

The Litter-Robot 4 features patented sifting technology that separates waste from clean litter after every use and drops clumps into a tightly sealed, carbon-filtered drawer, so odor and scooping essentially disappear.

The Whisker app tracks litter and waste levels in real time, logs each cat's weight with SmartScale, and tells you which cat is using the box.

We also like the SafeCat sensor system, which monitors the globe to keep cats safe during cycles, as well as the wide opening, QuietSift cleaning, and support for any clumping litter.

One unit handles up to four cats of nearly any size (3–25 lbs). It's expensive, and the base warranty is short, but its feature set makes daily litter duty all but vanish.

Pros

No odor or scooping
App monitors litter, waste, and cat weight
Fits up to 4 cats of all sizes
QuietSift cleaning cycle

Cons

Expensive
Short standard warranty

PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy Front-Entry Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Product dimensions: 27.6"L x 19.1"W x 16"H
Weight: 20.3 pounds
Color: Gray
Price: $161

This PetSafe box makes good on its odor-control and scoop-free promises. It automatically rakes your cat's waste into a covered compartment so you're not bending over a scoop every day. It also uses crystal litter that absorbs urine, neutralizes smell, and is 99% dust-free. To further prevent mess, a hooded cover keeps litter from flying.

While it’s not as high-tech as some of the other smart litter boxes on this list, a built-in health counter tracks how consistently your cats use the box.

Leak protection guards your floors, and cleanup is about as easy as it gets. The specialized crystal litter is designed not to stick to paws, so it stays in the box instead of scattering across your floors, and you simply swap in a fresh tray every few weeks.

PetSafe has expanded its ScoopFree litter box line to include app tracking, but this original remains the value pick.

Pros

Includes a ScoopFree crystal litter tray
Convenient and easy to use
Operates quietly

Cons

Ongoing tray/litter cost

Omega Paw Roll' N Clean Litterbox

Product dimensions: 21"L x 18.5"W x 20" H (also available in a smaller size)
Weight: 6.5 pounds
Color: Several
Price: $67

If you like the idea of a self-cleaning box but not the price tag, the Omega Paw Roll'N Clean is the no-frills, budget-friendly answer. There's no motor, no Wi-Fi, and no filters to replace. After use, simply roll the box onto its top and then back so it’s upright. The clumped waste drops into a pull-out tray you empty and replace. It's about as low-maintenance and failure-proof as a "self-cleaning" box gets.

An integrated step helps cats climb in and catches loose litter on the way out, reducing tracking. It won't monitor your cat's health or send you notifications, but it gets the job done cheaply and reliably. Just note that some owners find it runs small so bigger cats may be happier in the large version.

Pros

Extremely affordable
No electricity, filters, or liners required
Self-scooping roll mechanism

Cons

Runs small for large cats
Entryway doesn't fully contain litter

Pet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litter Box

Product dimensions: 25.5"L x 18.5"W x 10.5"H
Weight: 10.6 pounds
Color: Black/Gray
Price: $166

This cat litter box gives owners a hands-free experience without overhauling their friendly feline’s bathroom routine. It works well with several styles of clumping litter and uses a quiet motorized rake to sweep waste into a covered compartment after each use. Pet Zone claims it runs up to 75% quieter than comparable boxes.

Its open layout skips the hood some cats dislike, and while this also means less odor containment, carbon filters help cut odor.

It's rated for up to two cats between 6 and 16 pounds, and it's backed by a one-year limited warranty—useful, since some owners report the motor's lifespan can be hit-or-miss.

Pros

Affordable automatic option
Works with multiple clumping litters
One-year limited warranty

Cons

Motor longevity can be inconsistent
Best for smaller cats (6–16 lbs)

Things to consider before choosing the best self-cleaning litter box

Size

When buying a self-cleaning litter box, consider the space you want to place it in, your cats' size, and how many you have. A large litter box may not fit in a small bathroom, so measure your space before purchasing. Consider the shape, too. If you plan to put the litter box in a corner, a corner-shaped one would fit nicely.

If you have a large cat, such as a Maine Coon, or multiple felines in your home, opt for a big litter box so your cats can do their business comfortably.

Performance

A reliable self-cleaning litter box does the work for you (that's the whole point, right?). Most self-cleaning litter boxes require you to empty just the container—otherwise, you'll have a scoop-free experience. After cleaning these litter boxes, there should be no noticeable odor or clumps in the litter.

FAQ

How do self-cleaning litter boxes work?

These automatic litter boxes collect feline waste in the litter and drop it into a waste compartment, making it easy to get rid of waste and eliminating the need to scoop litter every day.

What are the disadvantages of an automatic litter box?

Automatic litter boxes make cleanup, monitoring, and organization easier, but like anything, they have drawbacks. They can be noisy, so owners of sensitive cats may find their feline friend is initially fearful of the box. Automatic litter boxes can also have technical issues, may not fit in small rooms, and are costly.

Are self-cleaning litter boxes worth it?

For those who want an easier life and aren't afraid to invest in a more premium litter box, self-cleaning litter boxes are worth it. No one likes constantly scooping litter and vacuuming it off the floor. These automatic litter boxes may not be worth the investment if you're on a budget or if you have cats that are sensitive to loud noises.

How long do automatic litter boxes last?

How long the cycles last depends on the brand. On average, you'll need to switch out the trays every month or so. It's uncertain how long automatic litter boxes will continue to work before issues arise, but their high-quality, high-tech construction gives them a longer lifespan than regular litter boxes.
