Hello and welcome to my portfolio site!

I’m Alexander Faludy, a British-Hungarian freelance journalist based in Budapest and Portsmouth. I write mainly about politics and religion in Viktor Orbán’s Hungary but have covered a broad range of topics relating to the country including diplomacy, corruption and migration. A particular focus has been on the implications of ‘illiberal democracy’ for Freedom of Religion or Belief, and the role of historic churches in enabling Fidesz’s consolidation of power at home and its networking abroad.

Prior to taking up journalism I served for a decade as a parish priest in the Church of England. I hold a BA in Theology and History of Art from Cambridge and an M.St. in Theology from Oxford. My degree from Cambridge was gained at the unusually early age of 18, making me the university’s youngest graduate in over 200 years.

My bylines have appeared across a broad spread of general and specialist media including: The Guardian, The i Paper, The Spectator, Church Times, National Catholic Reporter, and The Tablet. I also supply radio commentary on Hungary for several UK stations and have been pleased to speak about the country at panel events, including ones hosted by the Fabian Society and the Foreign Policy Centre in the Palace of Westminster.

Besides my news coverage and political analysis I also welcome opportunities to review books and art exhibitions, and to write both historical and literary feature articles. Occasionally I’ve undertaken book editing projects, both fiction and non-fiction.
