What we like

Absolutely gorgeous OLED display

We found the HP Envy x360 to be extremely comfortable and easy to use day-to-day.

OLED displays are dominating the laptop space recently, and the HP Envy is no different. The Enxy x360’s 400-nit HDR display achieves true blacks even on full brightness settings thanks to OLED panels’ ability to turn off individual pixels when not in use, and the colors are vibrant enough to pop off the screen with full DCI-P3 color gamut coverage.

The glossy finish brings out the richness and saturation of the display’s image, but it would be nice to see a matte or anti-glare option someday. Unfortunately, 400 nits are enough for a bright room but can feel limited in direct sunlight.

As for touch and pen inputs, the display works flawlessly. Gestures are detected with no issues. If you like to take notes or draw on your 2-in-1, the Envy x360 supports MPP 2.0 with a compatible stylus like the Microsoft Surface Slim Pen 2 (but you will have to buy it separately).

The experience isn’t quite as smooth as what you’d get from an iPad or Android tablet, but it’s a valuable tool nonetheless for Windows-only programs like Blender.

It’s as comfortable as it is beautiful

Sometimes, in the pursuit of sleekness some laptops will eschew comfort by adding sharp edges or odd contours. Not so with the Envy x360, whose soft rounded edges and slight lip beneath the trackpad make it extremely comfortable to use for long hours. It’s also a fairly thin 2-in-1 even in tablet mode, measuring just under .75 inches in thickness.

The all-metal finish on the Envy x360 is more characteristic of premium laptops like the Dell XPS 14, Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16, or MacBook Air 13. Likewise, the hinge is sturdy and smooth, and I find it hard to imagine that you’d be able to bust it with regular use.

The keyboard and trackpad deserve a chef’s kiss

The keyboard and trackpad have long been some of my favorite parts about the HP Envy line. This generation of Envy x360 has the same excellent keyboard and trackpad of yore. The keys are the perfect stiffness with enough give to type lightly without mispressing, and they’re spaced just right to avoid crowding and overextension alike. Unfortunately, the keyboard lacks a numpad like other 16-inch competitors, but the Envy makes the most of the extra space on the sides by widening the speaker grilles.

The trackpad is quite large, but it’s hard to lay my palm on it by accident—the lower lip beneath it is the perfect palm rest. As for the trackpad itself, its surface is smooth and easy to glide across, with multi-finger gestures working without issue. There isn’t much to say about it except it does what a trackpad should do.

Performance is in the middle of the pack

The Envy x360’s AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS does not break records for regular performance or graphics performance. Its performance is average among productivity laptops for performance across multiple benchmarks like Geekbench, Cinebench, and Blender. However, you will have to keep in mind that pushing this processor does make the PC’s fans get loud. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think the laptop was preparing for takeoff whenever it’s running a BIOS update with fans at full speed.

The Envy x360 beats out MacBook Air 13 M3, Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i, and HP Pavilion Plus 16 for both single and multi-core performance by a comfortable margin. It does not beat out a MacBook 14 M3 Pro or the Acer Swift X 14, but unlike these two laptops the HP Envy x360 is also a 2-in-1.

If you want more power, you’ll have to look at much more expensive alternatives like the Asus Proart PX13.

What we don’t like

Battery life is sub-par

Unfortunately, the battery won't get you through an entire work day.

It’s not uncommon for larger laptops to have a short battery life, but even so it’s disappointing to see. The HP Envy x360 lasts a grand total of 6 hours and 18 minutes before it goes kaput. It’s better than the old HP Envy x360, but that isn’t saying much. When we test laptops, we set the display brightness to 200 nits and switch battery settings to Eco mode. From here, we simulate a workday of medium productivity on the fully charged laptop by cycling through about 20 Google Chrome tabs until the laptop runs out of battery.

Other 16-inch laptops, notably the HP Pavilion Plus 16 and 2024 Dell XPS 16 can get 8 hours of battery life or more without compromising on performance or thinness.

Audio isn’t up to snuff

The Envy x360 has hollow sound with forward lower mids (aka the vocal range). Bass is present, but it’s muddy. Treble is a miss entirely—highs are quiet compared to the rest and wimpy sounding when they’re present. If you put a lot of value into audio, the Dell XPS 16 or Lenovo Yoga 9i might be more up your alley.

Should you buy the HP Envy x360 (2024)?

Yes, it’s a great laptop for a great price

The HP Envy x360 is one of our favorite 2-in-1 laptops, and deserves strong consideration if you're in the market for one.

The HP Envy x360 strikes a great balance between a polished design and an attractive price. It packs a high-performance processor into its relatively slim chassis, an uncommon choice in a sea of high efficiency processors like the Ryzen 7 U-series processors. Add in the Envy x360’s beautiful OLED display and you get a 2-in-1 laptop that’s a steal for under a thousand dollars.

Unfortunately, you will have to accept the Envy x360’s lackluster battery life of just over 6 hours. Among 2-in-1s, the HP Pavilion Plus 16, Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i, and Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 have it beat, and if you’re open to considering traditional laptops the Acer Swift X 14 and LG Gram 17 have phenomenal battery life.

While the Envy x360 isn’t the perfect laptop, it’s a well-built, reliable, fast machine with an incredible user experience. You can’t find a more powerful 2-in-1 at this price without making other compromises.
