Note: At Adamantine Energy, I had the opportunity to draft some editions of the CEO's newsletter, Both of These Things Are True. I wrote the first drafts of these editions, which were edited by members of the team. These editions were sent via ActiveCampaign and posted on the CEO's LinkedIn. This is the final, edited copy of this newsletter.

When it comes to innovation in and around oil and gas, Czero co-founder and CEO Guy Babbitt is a huge geek—which Energy Thinks listeners know I love! On this episode of the podcast, we discuss what oil and gas leaders need to watch to stay attuned to the high pace of innovation. Guy calls himself a "pragmatic environmentalist"—which he defines as "providing change that is not going to cost people large amounts of money and, even more importantly, not ask them to change their behavior." Listen to find out what that kind of change might mean for your leadership.

A few of Guy's insights

On the importance of companies moving forward on decarbonization: "There are a lot of companies, communities, and individuals that stand to lose a lot in this transition if they don’t get it right. So there can be a natural tendency to resist change. And certainly there are some areas that are harder to decarbonize than others. But we can do it, and it’s a losing proposition to try to hang on to the past. Those companies and communities that really embrace the change and align with change are the ones that are going to do better in the end."

On the importance of assessing new technology’s system costs: "There may be an emerging technology that looks promising, but sometimes people don’t look at the overall system costs of that technology. Doing technical economic analyses earlier on that are well integrated with the engineering can be really important."

On decarbonizing the global energy system: "I feel quite strongly that these goals for 2050 are achievable from a technical standpoint, even a financial standpoint. It's just a matter of will."

On his leadership focus: "We're building the company around the people. We've had a lot of opportunities to pivot our business that might have been more profitable but are not aligned with our mission."
