This might come across as a bit of a rant! Please don’t write your LinkedIn profile’s About section as though it’s the Summary on your resume. They do have some similarities but they are not the same thing.

We see plenty of profiles that start with a good headline and maybe even use Creator Mode hashtags to capture audience interest, but when we get to the About section it’s pretty skinny. It doesn’t tell us much more about why this person is worth following or inviting to connect.

While the summary section on your resume needs to be short, sharp and tailored for job applications, your LinkedIn About section serves a different purpose.

This is business, not a job search

By the time someone has checked out your profile photo, banner image and headline, if they open your About section they are looking for a more detailed narrative. Don’t disappoint them!

People do business with other people, not with cold, objective descriptions. You have 2,600 characters available. Use them well to build the story of how you solve your customers’ problems and deliver consistent value. Don’t be afraid to give it a personal tone.

Oh, and always remember to include a call to action at the end. What do you want them to do once they’ve read your About section? Don’t leave them hanging.

Is your LinkedIn About section making an impression or could it use a make-over?
