How to make the backed up versions of your content public

For all articles that you import to your Authory account, a backup is automatically created in your account. By default, this backup is only accessible by you.

However, you can make this backup available to visitors of your portfolio, too. Instead of being forwarded to the original content item, they'll be forwarded to the article backup then. This can be very handy if the original isn't available anymore, and you don't want to forward visitors of your portfolio to a 404 page (that's what's usually referred to as "link rot". We have a quick video tutorial how to counter link rot here).

Here is how that works:

Making individual pieces available

Go to the article details view and click "Share Settings" in the top bar. A menu will open which allows you to switch to "Link to copy":

Making all pieces from a source available

Go to your Source Settings and select the respective source. There is a dropdown labelled "Share Settings" where you can select "Link to copy":

If selected, all content items from this source will forward visitors of your portfolio or public collections to the article backup instead of the original.

Making pieces in a specific collection available only

Sometimes you might want your articles on your public portfolio to continue to link to the original, but the same articles in a specific collection should link to the backed up version.

Instead of changing the settings per article or per source, you can also change the settings per Collection.

Go to authory.com/app/collections and click on the respective collection to see its detailed view. Then open the Settings menu in the top right corner and select "Always link to copy" from the dropdown:

Make sure you have the share link on the left enabled, otherwise this option won't appear in the Settings menu.
