Collections on your portfolio vs. Standalone collections

Collections are a fantastic way to curate your content. You can add items manually (e.g. a collection with your top 10 pieces), or you can use the filter feature to automatically populate a collection (e.g. all articles from a specific source, or with a specific keyword).

There are two main use cases for collections:

Using collections on your portfolio

Collections are the "containers" for all the content items that you want to display on your portfolio. When building your portfolio, you start by creating a collection, importing the content items you want, then adding the collection to your portfolio page.

Collections appear as different tabs on your portfolio:

Authory users usually add several collections to their portfolio, but you can add a single collection only, too.

If you add a collection to your portfolio, all the content said collection contains will be displayed on your portfolio. However, you can also use the collections detached from your portfolio, as "standalone collections".

Here is how:

Using collections standalone

If you go to authory.com/app/collections, you'll see an overview of all your collections. Click on an existing one or create a new one and you'll see the collection details.

On the collections details page, you can add a description, style your collection and of course add content:

If you create a new collection, it's private by default, meaning only you can see it. However, you can create a share link and hereby make it public:

The result is a beautiful, shareable selection of your content. It's essentially like a custom "mini portfolio" that can only be accessed by whoever you shared the link with.

In fact, many Authory users create custom collections if they apply for a job: They select the pieces that match the requirements best, add a personal note and send the share link.

PS: In theory, you can even use the same collection on your portfolio AND standalone at the same time:

Good to know

  • You can use the same collection both on your portfolio, and as a standalone collection.

  • The styling that you give to a standalone collection (header image, content layout) will not be used when the collection is added to your portfolio. When added to a portfolio, the styling of the portfolio applies, and only the content from the collection is taken.
