How do I transfer my existing domain to Authory?

Written by Eric from Authory

If you already own a domain elsewhere (with Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap, or another registrar), you can transfer it to Authory's partner, Hover. Hover then automatically configures the DNS to point to your Authory portfolio, so you don't need to touch any DNS settings yourself.

This is the easiest way to use a domain you already own with Authory. If you'd rather keep your domain with your current registrar, see How do I connect an existing domain to Authory? instead.

Step-by-step

  1. In Authory, go to Settings β†’ Custom domain

  2. Click the button labeled "Transfer existing domain"

  3. Follow the link to Hover and start the transfer for your domain Learn more

  4. Use the Hover Connect library to apply the correct DNS settings automatically. Learn more

  5. Complete the transfer on Hover using the authorisation code from your current registrar

  6. Wait for the transfer to complete. This typically takes 24-48 hours, and Hover will email you when it's done

  7. Once the transfer is complete, return to Authory, enter your domain, and click Connect domain

What happens next

After you click Connect domain, we'll validate the connection automatically. Since Hover has already configured the DNS, this is usually instant. You'll get an email as soon as your domain is live.

Your default Authory URL (authory.com/yourname) will continue to work alongside your custom domain.

A note on timing

Domain transfers between registrars can take up to 48 hours, and occasionally longer. If you try to connect your domain in Authory before the transfer is fully complete, validation will fail. In that case, just try again once Hover confirms the transfer is done.
