How Smart Share Links Work in Authory

Written by Eric from Authory

Authory’s Smart Share Links help you understand what happens after you share your work.

Instead of simply sending a portfolio, collection, or work sample and hoping for the best, Smart Share Links let you track:

  • whether someone opened the link

  • when they opened it

  • where they opened it from

  • which content items they clicked on

  • the order in which they viewed them

This is especially useful when applying for jobs, pitching clients, or sharing curated work samples for a specific opportunity.

What Is a Smart Share Link?

A Smart Share Link is a trackable version of a normal share link. You can create one for:

  • your portfolio

  • a collection

  • an individual content item

Unlike a standard share link, a Smart Share Link gives you visibility into how the recipient interacted with what you shared.

Where to Find Smart Sharing

You’ll find the option by clicking the Share button on any of the following:

In addition to the usual sharing options, you’ll see a button labeled Create Smart Share Link.

How to Create a Smart Share Link for Your Portfolio

Step 1: Open the Share Menu

Go to your portfolio and click the Share button.

Step 2: Create a Smart Share Link

Click Create Smart Share Link. You’ll be asked to give the link a name, for example:

  • My Application

  • Client Pitch

  • Editor Outreach

This makes it easier to identify the purpose of the link later.

Step 3: Copy and Send the Link

Once created, you can copy the Smart Share Link and send it to the intended recipient. At first, the link will show no visits yet. As soon as someone opens it, Authory will begin tracking activity.

What You Can Track

Once someone opens your Smart Share Link, Authory records a session. For each session, you can see:

  • the time the link was opened

  • the visitor’s location

  • how many items were viewed

  • how many clicks happened in total

If you open the session details, you can also see:

  • exactly which items were clicked

  • the order in which they were viewed

  • whether the same item was clicked more than once

This means you’re not just tracking whether someone opened your portfolio, you’re also seeing what actually caught their attention.

Smart Sharing for Collections

Smart Share Links also work for collections. This is especially helpful if you’ve created a standalone collection for:

  • a job application

  • a freelance pitch

  • a grant application

  • a specific client or editor

Instead of sharing your entire portfolio, you can share only the most relevant work samples, and track how the recipient engaged with them.

Example workflow:

  1. Open a collection

  2. Click the Share button

  3. Select Create Smart Share Link

  4. Name the link

  5. Copy and send it

Once the recipient opens it, you’ll see:

  • when they visited

  • where they were located

  • how many items they viewed

  • which work samples they clicked on

This makes Smart Sharing especially useful for follow-ups. If you know someone opened your collection and spent time clicking through specific samples, you have a much better sense of when and how to follow up.

Smart Sharing for Individual Work Samples

You can also create a Smart Share Link for a single content item. This is useful when:

  • you want to send one specific article

  • you want to track whether someone reviewed a particular work sample

  • you’re highlighting one especially relevant piece for an opportunity

The process works the same way:

  1. Open the content item

  2. Click the Share button

  3. Select Create Smart Share Link

  4. Copy and send the link

Where to Manage Your Smart Share Links

You can view all of your Smart Share Links in the left sidebar under Smart Share Links. There, you’ll see:

  • all links you’ve created

  • whether they’re active

  • how many visits each one has received

From this section, you can also:

  • open the link details with session history

  • deactivate a Smart Share Link

  • delete it entirely

Deactivating vs Deleting a Link

Authory gives you two options if you no longer want a Smart Share Link to be usable:

  • Deactivate: The link stops working but the session history remains available

  • Delete: The link is removed completely

If you still want to keep the tracking history for reference, deactivating is usually the better option.

Why Smart Share Links Are Useful

Smart Share Links are especially valuable when you want more insight into how your work is being received. They help you answer questions like:

  • Did the recruiter actually open my portfolio?

  • Which work samples did they look at?

  • Did they only skim, or did they click through several pieces?

  • When is a good time to follow up?

That makes Smart Sharing particularly useful for:

  • job applications

  • freelance outreach

  • pitch follow-ups

  • client proposals

  • tailored collections for specific opportunities

That’s It

Smart Share Links turn sharing into something much more useful than a simple URL.

Instead of sending your work and wondering what happened, you can see:

  • whether it was opened

  • when it was opened

  • where it was opened

  • what the recipient actually explored

If you regularly use Authory for applications, pitches, or private collections, this feature can be incredibly helpful.
