The Sauder School of Business at UBC recruited me for three years, to lead educational initiatives that would advance innovation and creativity in their curricula. As part of this work, I partnered with Professor Moura Quayle to develop a centre for strategic design.
Embedding design practice into a traditional, quantitative research business school turned out to be a tough challenge, and the centre went through many iterations. A narrative planning approach that explored the history of design in business, as well as emerging initiatives, helped us create a foundation and set the direction for the desired future. During this start-up period, we also developed several story-based design techniques for use in the studio, including tools for user research, rapid prototyping and participatory design.
