Nintendo’s recent “Donkey Kong Bananza” Direct delivered a detailed look at the upcoming 3D action-adventure game, featuring a vibrant visual style, innovative gameplay mechanics, and a fresh narrative with Donkey Kong and Pauline. The presentation highlighted the game’s core premise, extensive character abilities, a mix of new and returning characters, and numerous features aimed at enhancing exploration and replayability. Early reactions to the game’s visuals are positive, and the previewed music has sparked anticipation for the full soundtrack.

Unearthing a New Adventure: General Gameplay & Story Elements

This new 3D platforming adventure tasks Donkey Kong and Pauline with exploring a vast, uncharted underground world, where environments dynamically change and grow more spectacular with depth. Their ultimate goal is to reach the planet core, a legendary place where wishes are granted—Pauline seeks a return to the surface, while Donkey Kong yearns for more bananas. The game offers both solo play and co-op play options, allowing players to freely control Donkey Kong in any direction.

Donkey Kong’s Versatile Prowess: Destructive & Utility Abilities

Donkey Kong leverages his immense physical strength and agility for a wide array of actions, enabling dynamic environmental interaction. His abilities include basic movement (run, jump, climb) and extensive destructive capabilities. He can Smash, Crash, and Bash most elements in his path, leading to discoveries and chain reactions. Powerful Punches, a ground-drilling Dive Punch, and high-speed Rolls (combinable with jumps and punches) are all part of his arsenal.

For utility and discovery, DK can use a Hand Slap to collect scattered items or detect hidden objects via sonar, an ability improvable with skill points. Donkey Kong can tear off segments of the terrain, such as chunks of ground or “turnups,” to uncover hidden items; this action can also be applied to foes to disarm or damage them. Utilizing a torn-off chunk, Donkey Kong gains the ability to perform a chunk jump, a type of double jump that assists in reaching elevated platforms or bypassing obstacles. Furthermore, Donkey Kong can ride on these dislodged chunks of terrain, a maneuver termed Turf Surf, which provides a means of rapid traversal and can be used to clear paths by knocking away smaller adversaries. These abilities provide dynamic environmental interaction and varied combat approaches. Players collect Banandium Gems to earn Skill Points for customization, such as increasing health, punch power, or learning new skills like enhanced sonar.

Pauline’s Pivotal Role and Bananza Transformations

Pauline, the talented singer, provides crucial support through her musical talents. Her singing offers musical guidance and can remove strange seals. Central to her role is the Bananergy System: collecting gold builds “banana energy,” enabling Pauline to activate temporary Bananza Transformations for Donkey Kong, enhancing his destructive prowess.

Kong Bananza makes DK incredibly strong, allowing him to plow through tough terrain.
Zebra Bananza grants speed and “strikey” dashes over water or crumbling paths.
Ostrich Bananza enables flight, updraft use, and egg bomb drops.
These transformations are temporary but reactivated by gold, and players are encouraged to creatively swap between them. Pauline learns these powers from the ancient Giant Elders.

The Void Company and Other Denizens

The primary antagonist is The Void Company (VoidCo), a mining operation responsible for Donkey Kong’s predicament and Pauline’s transformation into “Odd Rock.” VoidCo aims for the planet core, blocking routes to lower layers. Key members include Grumpy Kong, Poppy Kong, and Void Kong. The underground also features diverse other inhabitants, along with familiar faces like Cranky Kong and Rambi. The details on enemies and allies, though brief, appear intriguing.

Collectibles, Customization, and Modes

The game offers several collectibles, including Banandium Gems (Golden Bananas), Banandium Chips (tradable for gems), Gold (for shop items), and Fossils (for fashions). Fashions customize Donkey Kong and Pauline, often offering benefits, and DK’s fur color can also be changed. Treasure Chests provide maps for collectibles, and Completion Tracking helps monitor progress.

Diverse game modes include Challenges for earning gems, Getaways for rest, and Eelevators and Teleportation for world traversal. Creative options like Photo Mode and DK Artist Mode allow players to capture and create. An Assist Mode provides guidance and reduces damage.

For multiplayer, the game supports Local Co-op Play, where two players can control Donkey Kong and Pauline separately. This can be achieved by sharing a single Joy-Con 2 controller or by utilizing a second set of Joy-Cons. In this mode, Pauline’s unique co-op controls enable her to unleash vocal blasts using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and replicate nearby terrain material to add texture to her vocals, which can facilitate overcoming challenging enemies. The game also features Game Share, allowing multiple players to participate even if only one individual owns a copy. For local sharing, a single game copy can be quickly transferred to another player’s Nintendo Switch system (including the 1st Gen Nintendo Switch models, as well as the Nintendo Switch 2), allowing them to join the game on their console. For online sharing, players can connect via Game Chat between Nintendo Switch 2 systems.

Lastly, amiibo support unlocks exclusive items: new Donkey Kong and Pauline amiibo provide Diva Dress and explosive KONG tiles; Donkey Kong Series amiibo give gold KONG tiles; and other amiibo provide terrain material spheres.

The “Donkey Kong Bananza” Direct showcased a promising 3D platformer, blending beloved characters with fresh mechanics and extensive features, poised to deliver a memorable adventure for fans.
