The Northern Super League (NSL) completed its inaugural season on November 15, 2025, with Vancouver Rise FC defeating AFC Toronto 2-1 to secure the Diana B. Matheson Cup. The league’s debut year established its operational presence within the global women’s professional soccer landscape, reporting substantial attendance figures, revenue generation, and governmental support. The reported performance metrics indicate a notable entry into the Canadian women’s professional sports sector.

The championship final, presented by Toyota and held at BMO Field in Toronto, concluded with Vancouver Rise FC’s victory. AFC Toronto’s Kaylee Hunter opened scoring at the 20-minute mark. Vancouver equalized at 54 minutes via Nikki Stanton, with Holly Ward securing the winning goal at 68 minutes. The match experienced delays due to lightning. AFC Toronto led 16-8 in total shots and 8-3 in shots on target, with possession evenly split, but Vancouver Rise FC converted more efficiently.

League Performance and Business Indicators

For its inaugural season, the NSL reported average attendance ranking among the **top five globally** for women’s professional soccer leagues. The league recorded over 275,000 tickets purchased, with home openers in Vancouver and Toronto each surpassing 14,000 fans.

Financially, the NSL generated approximately **$30 million in league-wide revenue**, placing it within the top eight women’s soccer leagues globally by this metric. This revenue was supported by 16 national league partners and over 50 club partners, including founding sponsors such as Canadian Tire, BMO, Toyota, and Coca-Cola.

The league’s player base comprised 148 signed players, consisting of 101 Canadians and 47 international players from 19 countries. Over half of these players were recruited from Tier 1 global leagues. The NSL operated with a **$1.6 million salary cap** per club and an average player salary of approximately **$75,000 CAD**, with a minimum salary of $50,000 CAD. These figures position the NSL’s player compensation among higher-tier global leagues.

Competitive play was characterized by close contests, with 85% of games decided by two goals or fewer. The season averaged 2.6 goals per match, featuring 65 different goal-scorers. In terms of talent development, seven NSL players received Canadian Senior National Team call-ups in 2025, and the league included 39 players with Senior National Team experience, totaling over 1,300 caps.

Media reach included over 3 million Canadians on linear broadcasts and a reported 104,000 unique media stories, with a potential reach of over 35 billion. Digital engagement for league-wide accounts saw an increase of over 279,000 followers, while players collectively registered over 3.7 million followers.

Government Support and Future Objectives

The Government of Canada announced a commitment of up to **$5.45 million** through its regional development agencies. This funding is intended to support the NSL’s growth, facilitate tourism, support local businesses, enhance fan and player experiences, and fund facility upgrades, including proposed investments for Ottawa Rapid FC and AFC Toronto stadium and training facilities.

Diana Matheson, NSL Founder & Chief Growth Officer, commented on the investment’s role in addressing “soccer infrastructure” gaps in Canada. The government’s support is positioned within a broader aim to develop a robust women’s professional sports industry in Canada, projected to become a billion-dollar sector by 2030, based on an estimated global growth from under $1 billion in 2023 to $2.4 billion in 2025. This initiative seeks to foster professional pathways for Canadian athletes within the country.

The league has outlined plans for future growth, including adding a **seventh club in 2027** and a long-term vision of approximately **12 teams over 10 years**, with a priority on further expansion in Central or Western Canada. The NSL is also pursuing a spot for one of its clubs in the **W Champions Cup for the 2026-27 competition** and is in discussions with CONCACAF for increased representation. Regional collaborations with the NWSL (USA) and Liga MX Femenil (Mexico) are also being explored. A stated strategic priority is to attract additional global investment into the Canadian women’s sports market.
