Today's Deep Thought on Politics:
Did any of you ever watch Mama's Family? It was a spinoff of The Carol Burnett Show, ran on TV in the early to mid-1980s, and was based on the skits from The Carol Burnett Show featuring Vicki Lawrence as Thelma Harper.
Well, in Mama's Family, there is a two-episode story arc in which Mama, a no-nonsense, plain-speaking, completely inexperienced political neophyte decides to run for mayor because the mayor himself is an arrogant jerk who treats Mama in condescending fashion when she hosts a campaign event for him in her home as a favor to her daughter.
The first episode is all about Mama, the populist crusader, campaigning on a platform to make Raytown great again (or something like that). She runs around town making a fool of the mayor, promising big things, and manages to pull off a stunning upset of Raytown's political establishment.
The second episode is about Mayor Mama, who quickly learns that running even a podunk like Raytown is complicated work. She soon has everyone from the sanitation workers to the Boy Scouts mad at her and threatening to storm City Hall. What to do?
Mama calls in the former mayor who quickly straightens everything out. He was a jerk, but he knew what he was doing. Mama promptly resigns, the mayor gets his job back, and both of them learn some needed humility from each other.
Which leads me to today's Deep Thought that this country is stupider than a silly '80s sitcom.
