Loa Skin is one of those beauty products that once people try it, they cannot imagine living without it! Developed by two 20-something entrepreneurs – Tyler Yang and Spencer Angeltvedt – both are personally familiar with problematic skin conditions having experienced it themselves.
Seeking a solution after available products (over the counter and from dermatologists) did not deliver, they formulated a certified cruelty-free beauty product that works, bottled it, and have grown Loa Skin into a highly sought-after product with 19 stockists in the Lower Mainland and numerous online distributors.
Loa Skin began as the hunt for a long-term solution to troubled skin. It was not from lack of trying, of course, the duo scoured the shelves of drug stores, high-end counters and every source in between for a solution to their respective worries. So many promised results, but so few actually delivered results. Some even worsened the situation with adverse side effects. “Between the two of us, we had become lab rats for Proactiv, Lush, Mario Badescu, Arbonne, Clean & Clear, Olay, Avon, La Mer, Rx topical steroids, and the list goes on.”
As they navigated through endless, overwhelming options, Spencer and Tyler decided enough was enough. Together they took matters into their own hands. The answer had to be somewhere, so with the help of scientific innovation and botany’s power, they set out to discover it. The two of them set up a home-based shop and thus the journey to create a skincare product that actually delivered began.
Before mixing and testing began, there was research to be done. To revolutionize skincare, first, they had to learn everything and then question it. This is how they stumbled upon a study on the use of fatty acids to soothe inflammatory skin conditions, just like theirs. The formula has changed since the original formula five years ago, with the only ingredient remaining from that first one is the Calendula. “The same great science has applied from the very beginning, though. We are currently on our third formulation. We don’t see us changing this anytime soon, but when the science advances, we will be there to push our products forward.”
The company outgrew its humble home-based beginnings and is now being developed and produced in a vegan-friendly manufacturing facility, where they produce Loa Skin in high volume.
Though they have hinted at something new in the works, Loa Skin currently is standing by its singular product that has been working incredibly for all those who have tried it. Spencer shares: “Our hero product, Botanical Beauty Elixir, is an oil-based moisturizer and serum hybrid. It nourishes your skin delivering nutrients deep within while keeping you hydrated. Our customers also use it as a makeup remover, oil cleanser, and hair deep conditioner!”
The Botanical Beauty Elixir is vegan, cruelty-free and palm oil-free. It promises to brighten, hydrate, clear and soothe skin. The formula is packed with 15 different botanicals, is rich in omega-3 and 6 fatty acids and includes Astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. All of these work together to reduce redness, breakouts, eczema and acne.
Local small-business owner, Marisa Pothier of Honest Cleaning and Services, uses Loa Skin to ensure her hands are able to do their job every day. “I love how soft and how fast it cleared up my dry skin and flaky skin. As someone deeply invested in caring for our animal friends, finding a locally-created moisturizer that not only worked wonders on my skin but is vegan and cruelty-free, was amazing.”
The Botanical Beauty Elixir is the star of the show, and though a new product is in the works, the Loa Skin team is in no hurry to launch it. Instead, they prefer to take their time to get it right; many of the products they plan to launch will need to be formulated for years before making it to market to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety. As a business, the founders of Loa Skin plan on infusing more of their values into the brand, beyond quality skincare. We look forward to sharing news of new products as Loa Skin releases them for all to enjoy!
