VERNON — The Town Council had only a brief meeting Tuesday, but it did unanimously approve the transfer of about $37,000 from the Center Road School driveway project to the Capital and Non-Recurring Education Account.

School finance director Bill Meier said the school driveway project came in under budget. The Town Council approved $321,000 for the work in 2019 from the education account.

A great majority of driveway work was done in summer 2019. But knowing solar canopies were going to be added at a later date, it was not completed in that timeframe because officials did not want to have to drill into the new pavement and complete the process again.

After the solar canopies were installed this summer, the paving was completed.

Mayor Daniel Champagne said the school’s nonrecurring account is available to get projects done quicker and to save money.

“And when they save money throughout the school year, any leftover monies can go into the capital nonrecurring account,” he said. “So it's kind of an incentive program that we started a few years back.”

The Town Council is required to sign off before the funds can be used.
