Soccer: Los Lunas girls, Valencia boys off to strong starts

The Los Lunas boys soccer team fell to 0-2 on Monday following a weather-shortened 4-0 loss to Sandia Prep.

The Tigers rarely threatened offensively, only forcing one save as the Sundevils controlled the majority of possession and provided most of the attacking threat.

The game was called ten minutes into the second-half following a weather delay of over 30 minutes due to storms in the area.

Since a half had been completed, the game was considered an official contest and deemed a victory for the Sundevils, who are expected to be one of the top teams in Class 3A.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 0-2 on the season after losing the opener to Alamogordo 10-0 last Thursday.

AHS controlled the game from the opening whistle and took the lead early on. The Tigers managed three shots on goal in the game, all of which were saved. Next up for LLHS is a trip to Los Alamos for the Louie Cernecek Tournament, which begins on Friday against Goddard. The Tigers will have two additional games in the tournament as well, with those opponents to be determined.

The Los Lunas girls soccer opened their season last weekend at the Aztec tournament and went 2-1 with wins over Kirtland Central and Farmington, and a loss to Hobbs.

The win over Kirtland Central opened the season and gave Jackie Candelaria her first win in charge of the program. The Tigers’ offense dominated the game and produced 14 shots, leading to five goals.

Logan Aragon, Izabella Olguin, Mckaylee Burt and Mia Carabajal-Hartog were the goal scorers for the Tigers, with Carabajal-Hartog scoring twice.

The win over Farmington was by a score of 3-1 with Burt and Carabajal scoring, in addition, Eleaha Sangre scored her first goal of the season.

Hobbs gave the Tigers their first loss of the season in the final game of the tournament and did so in resounding fashion, winning 6-0.

Next up, the Tigers will take on Valencia tonight, Thursday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. at VHS.

The Valencia boys opened their season on Tuesday at home hosting Socorro, winning comfortably by a score of 3-0.

Next up for the Jags is a home match against Los Lunas on Monday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m.

The Valencia girls opened their season with a road defeat to Goddard, 2-1 and will look to open the home slate on a positive note when they host Los Lunas
