Football: Los Lunas opens with win, Jags fall

The prep football season started for two county teams last Friday as Valencia and Los Lunas kicked off their seasons at Alamogordo and Piedra Vista, respectively.

The Tigers put in a dominant performance in Greg Henington’s debut leading the program with a 42-0 win over the Panthers.
Junior quarterback Paul Cieremans was dominant on the ground for LLHS, leading the way with 133 yards on eight carries. He also went 6-for-19 for 49 yards with an interception through the air.

The Tigers’ offense put up a total of 323 yards on the day, with 274 of those yards coming on the ground.

In addition to their offensive prowess, the Tiger defense shut out the Panthers and forced 5 turnovers as well, including two interceptions from Nicholas Torres. Next up, the Tigers will open their home slate as they host Alamogordo on Friday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m.

Alamogordo comes into the game at 1-0 after their win over the Jaguars last week by a score of 45-6.

The Jaguars were undermanned against a bigger Alamogordo squad. The Tigers offense put up 361 yards on Valencia on their way to the victory. Valencia scored in the fourth quarter when Rey Garcia connected with Nate Rodriguez on a 23-yard touchdown pass.

The Jaguars will look to rebound on Friday when they host Del Norte at 7 p.m. The Knights forfeited their week one matchup against Atrisco Heritage Academy due to extenuating circumstances, so it will be the season opener for the team.

Belen had its game against West Mesa canceled following the school’s move to remote learning, but the Eagles will open their season on Friday at Farmington in head coach Andrew McCraw’s debut.
